Hundreds of domestic and international flights will be seriously delayed today, affecting the travel plans of thousands of passengers, as air traffic controllers stop work in Sydney and Brisbane.
Many flights will be cancelled, with Sydney Airport able to operate only 12 flights an hour between 11am and 4pm. Usually there are 60 to 70 flight movements an hour during this period.
Qantas and Virgin Blue were last night urgently contacting passengers, trying to transfer them to earlier or later flights. However, serious delays are expected to continue throughout the evening.
Qantas said 25 per cent of all domestic flights on trunk routes would be affected, with plans to reschedule 30 domestic flights and cancel 18 services.
