The State Government has raised a new solution to the accident-prone ferry service from Manly: scrapping the high-speed commuter ferry within three years.

In a clear signal that the Government is losing patience with the troubled operation, it has asked a taskforce to consider an overhaul of the peak-hour service as part of its deliberations to fix the city's famous harbour transport system.

The taskforce, to be headed by the Department of Transport chief, Mr Michael Deegan, was formed in the wake of a ****ing report by the Waterways Commission which made more than 60 recommendations, including removing the SuperCats from the Manly run.

But civic leaders from Manly warned last night that they would fight any move to cull the peak-hour service that is used by hundreds of commuters every day.

The alternative would be a bus trip or a ferry trip on the giant Freshwater-class ferries, which take twice as long to lumber across the harbour, adding at least 30 minutes a day to travel time for those working in the Sydney CBD.

So is this just the Supercats, or are they looking to get rid of the jetcats too??
