In the month of August, if you could visit one other city in Australia besides Sydney, which would you go to and why?

Cairns. It's just about the only decent tropical place in the country. There's also Townsville but without immediate beaches, so you need to go out to the islands or drive a bit out of the city. Broome in WA is nice but with a tiny population it hardly can be classified even as a town. Darwin in the north has only one (main) beach even though it's nice and warm.
I would like to add just from my personal viewpoint that if you can you might want to make a brief stopover on one of the tropical islands on your way in or out of Australia like Fiji, French Polynesia or something of the kind. The experience will be unforgettable and imprinted in your memory for ever.

Melbourne is the best city to visit in Australia any time of year. Adelaide is probably the friendliest city of the capitals and August might be a good time to tour the Barrosa valley wineries since there shouldn't be too many tourists about in August.

Go to Uluru (Ayres Rock). It's absolutely magic in August. Days a very comfortable, nights get down to around freezing. I was there last August for 5 days and LOVED it. It even rained as I rode a push-bike out to Uluru from the Ayres Rock Resort.
