I am planning a trip to Australia/Cairns in December. My readings have cautioned about dealing with the start of the monsoon season, and I am considering eliminating Cairns altogether. Some showers during the day would certainly be tolerable, but non-stop rain would spoil the visit? Has anyone been? Any thoughts? Thanks
Don't let the 'wet' season put you off!
I have worked in Cairns and the Cape in all seasons over the past 5 years & I can assure you that December is OK. The area would normally get only two cyclonic storms (Hurricanes) during the season (Dec to Apr)& the rain depression that follows lasts for about four days. Otherwise the only problem is the humidity, but as a traveller this is OK as you're either diving on the reef or listening to some Sunday afternoon jazz in Port Douglas with a cool beer (we keep the glass' in the cooler too). If it gets too hot - go up to the tablelands, too wet - go to the Gulf Savanna. Cheers.
