Hi all,

I'll be arriving in SYD in mid-August for 2.5 weeks of vacationing. No firm plans yet other than a few days in Sydney, and some time relaxing with a friend in Brisbane. One definite on my to-do list is learning to dive on the Great Barrier. I'd appreciate suggestions on the following:

1. Best places in which to base myself to access the Great Barrier for diving and snorkelling - tentatively planning on staying a bit north of Cairns in the Marriott Courtyard (on points), but would appreciate other suggestions. I prefer a moderately social atmosphere, but do not necessarily want to be surrounded by hordes of (fellow!) tourists.

2. Thoughts on companies offering a live-aboard type of arrangement, with ballpark prices if at all possible. I heard from a seatmate recently that he was able to book a 4-day live-aboard for less than $500 CDN, including meals, accomodations, and the dive school. I'd love to hear about anything decent (and reputable!) around this price.

Thanx much,

For live-aboard diving tours and PADI training, try Mike Ball Diving, based in Townsville.

I've done their 6 day school, including a boat to the outer-reef for 3 days. It was a fabulous week.

It cost around AUS$500.

I went to Mike Ball because Lonely Planet recommended it, and it didn't disappoint.

MukMuk,

Thanks for the tip - I'm planning on picking up a copy of LP this weekend. Could you perhaps comment on comfort/food/atmosphere (social vs. solitary, etc.) of Mike's? For some reason I was expecting a live-aboard to cost much more than the prices I'm hearing, and I'm wondering if there is a catch (e.g., cramped bunks, cook-your-own food, etc.).

Thanks,

Zombie, the atmosphere on-board was very relaxed and social, but there's space enough to find somewhere quiet when you want.

There was no catch - the food was great (an ex-British Navy chef when I was there). The accommodation was shared with about 4 bunks to a room but not uncomfortable. Private accommodation was offered for a small surcharge.

The training facility in Townsville was first rate. Townsville is a quiter place than Cairns, but the advantage was that the places on the reef we went to we didn't have to share with daytrippers.

Have fun!
