My family and I are taking a cruise out of San Juan at the end of December, and we want to spend a few days there after the cruise. We have 2 kids, 11 and 14, so a resort works best. We don't know one hotel from another there. Any ideas?

My preference in Puerto Rico is usually the Intercontinental as it is on the best area of beach and has a huge jacuzzi where people really gather and visit together. But with kids, you might prefer the Caribe Hilton. It is a bit away from the other hotels that are located in Isla Verde (where the Intercontinental and the Wyndham El San Juan hotels are) and the hotels in Condado (Marriott, Wyndham Condado Plaza, etc.) I have heard that the Hilton offers more for youngsters and believe I have seen it go on Priceline for $65. a night. Whatever you do, DO NOT stay at the Wyndham Old San Juan which is right near the pier and has gotten terrible reviews. The names of the two hotels are very similar but that is where the similarity ends.

I think the Wyndham El Conuqestador is supposed to be the big hot lick on the Island. Would be very good for kids. I think you need a car if you stay there, as it is an hour or so outside San Juan. Read all about it here.

It had a lot of hurricane damage, but I presume it has been repaired. Has a casino, and terrific large birds.

Hard to go wrong on the beach in San Juan, but I agree that Old San Juan is probably not the best place if you're into the ocean.
That said, I've stayed at the Wyndham in Old San Juan, and thought it was pretty nice.
The Ritz is the best hotel on the beach IMO, and sometimes you can get *crazy* good rates there.

From the hotels where we've stayed, for kids I would have to rank them:
Hilton Caribe
El San Juan
Marriott
I would not recommend staying in Old San Juan.
The El Conquistador is a nice resort, but far removed from most everything. If you are a stay at the resort type traveler it will work for you, but we would get bored quite soon.
