Does anyone know if NW flies to this country? If not, what other US airlines are available? It's hard to believe that AA would be my only choice. Thanks

US flies daily from PHL to Santo Domingo and from CLT to Punta Cana.
if the fares are right, you might try making a connection with AC or charter airline Air Transat.

How about feedback on the Dominican Republic in general?
I've read that it is a reasonable destination w/lots of cultural flavor. My guess is it is like Puerto Rico was 15 years ago, but again that is a guess.
Has anyone been? Where did you stay? Would you go back? What did you do? OK, no more questions, just those few http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/wink.gif

I spent a week in Punta Cana in August 2001. Miles and miles of beautiful palm tree covered beaches and all-inclusive resorts. One thing that did stand out is that these resorts have some of the most beautiful swimming pools I have ever seen. It is probably one of the most economical islands in the Caribbean to visit right now.
For everything, and I do mean everything, you could possibly want to know about the Dominican Republic, visit Debbie's Dominican Republic (http://www.debbiesdominicantravel.com/)

I went to Casa De Campo about 10 years ago. Beautiful resort, but all the armed guards kind of took away from the relaxed feel. I went into Santa Domingo for a day. I wasn't sure if I would get out alive. What a hell hole! It was far scarier than anything NYC has to offer. Unless conditions have improved, I would go elsewhere.

Just got back from a two week stay in Sosua, north coast of DR. Enjoyed my time there but, don't know if I will go back. Kinda slow for me as far as the action goes. Bangkok is more to my liking. As far as armed guards are concerned, the only one I saw was the security guard at the hotel. 24 pesos to the dollar will last you a long time in the DR. A great place to go for water sports. Kinda hard to get a good airfare because AA has a monopolly on the north coast. Paid $517 from NO to POP. And that was cheap. NO to Bangkok is $640. So, not a good deal on airfare. Hotels are pretty reasonalbly, $15-$50 if you stay away from the All inclusive ones. Might try Coasta Rico next time. Believe the airfare is half the price of the DR. Later, Vol46

You really should read the forums at the link I posted previously.

Playsmart,
I posted an answer on the other forum. DR1.com is an excellent source for information regarding the DR. Northwest has charters on Saturday to Punta Cana and Puerto Plata. I think they are booked via tour operators. AA has a daily flight from Miami and about 3/5 daily flights from San Juan and almost daily from JFK. Apple Vacations has a tons of flight there. I will be there next week if anybody is going.
Also, Usairways just started flying from Charlotte and Pittsburg or Phily, check with them.
