KINGSTON, Jamaica (Reuters) -- Jamaican tourism officials are predicting visitor numbers will bounce back this winter, despite rising crime and after suffering from a travel downturn caused by the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Tourism is the leading foreign exchange earner for the Caribbean island of 2.7 million people, bringing in more than $1.3 billion last year. But crime -- there were 1,139 murders in 2001 and 1,005 so far this year -- has turned off many would-be visitors, some in the industry have said.
