Pity you missed the Tatoo... (it closed last Saturday).

What interests you? Food, theatre, music, museums, gambline?

Most of what you remember is still there, but depending on how long you have been away, it is probably much better developed.

The new Neptune is a first rate theatre, the Museum of the Atlantic and Pier 21 are very worthwhile. The "Shakespeare by the Sea" (a Haligonian, "Bard on the Beach") is usually first rate`.

All of the above: food, theatre, music, museums, gambling and just relaxation too! I imagine their has been tremendous growth in the latter half of the 1990's, no? I think of Halifax as very nice and very quiet! Am I missing something? Also, my wife will be coming for the first time! Thanks! http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif

Some of the friendliest dealers ever at the Casino. Try the Split Crow for cheap drinks, sloppy entertainment and good times. If you're up for it, rent a car and drive south to Peggy's Cove and Lunenberg.

Anything else?

Seems like the Sheraton is the best place to stay in town, no?

Thanks again! http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif

Hate to bring this up, but hoping that perhaps somebody could update this information for me - especially where to stay? Heading out there in a few weeks. Thanks for any and all suggestions!

I was very pleased with the Hotel Halifax. I was there in '98 if I recall correctly. At the time it was a Canadian Pacific Hotel. It may be part of the Fairmont chain now. It was centrally located, had very nice rooms, and a good restaurant. I recall having a double lobster dinner with all the fixin's for $15 CAD. If you have a car, do take a drive to Peggy's Cove and make sure to see Cannon Cave which is not far from there either.

Bumping this, because Mr.lv2 & I were just in the Maritimes on vacation a couple of weeks ago.

It was a lovely vacation ... so much to see & do throughout the 3 provinces that I'd like to go back for another week, to see what we didn't get to on this trip (Cape Breton Island & Antigonish in NS, and Minister's Island in NB, to name 3). And yes, I've now been spoiled for life by those Atlantic lobsters. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/biggrin.gif (I had lobster for dinner 3 nights, and other seafood the other nights. For a landlocked Midwesterner, that's a big deal!)

Anyway, was thinking about the folks in Halifax, etc. after I heard the news about the hurricane hitting them. When we were there 2 weeks ago, weather was glorious every day -- 75-80 degrees F & sunny.

(Isn't there at least one FT'er in that area? Wonder how he's doing.)

For a 4 day weekend trip, would I be missing alot without a car rental? Is there an express bus or shuttle service avail. to downtown? What is the cost? I was considering renting a car maybe for 1 day only.

It's unfortunately probably a bit too late for you but I'd say no. It's a great place to walk and you can get where you need too easily without a car IMHO - especially if you're spending lots of time at the casino! ;)

Getting out to Peggy Cove, etc., however, is a different story I'm afraid, so a car would be great.
