Although I haven't yet seen this reported in the mainland press, American Hawaii Cruises has declared Chapter 11 as of October 19 and has ceased all operations of the msPatriot and ssIndependence. The press release I read was somewhat vague about the status of the ships that are currently being built. Anyone have more information?

The story was front page news this weekend for the Honolulu Advertiser and the Star Bulletin. Both can be read online. starbulletin.com for the Star, can't call the Adveriser's web address. Very sad news for Hawaii because it means a lot of layoffs on top of many already from the hotels, etc.

From the Federal Maritime Commission website:
"The Commission has received notice that American Classic Voyages Co. filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code on October 19, 2001, in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. American Classic Voyages Co. is the parent of American Hawaii Cruises, United States Lines, Delta Queen Steamboat Company and Delta Queen Coastal Voyages, all of which have suspended their cruise operations, except that the vessel DELTA QUEEN apparently will continue to operate."

American Classic Voyages' own website has more information:
"Although the legendary Delta Queen steamboat will continue to cruise America’s Heartland, without interruption, we regretfully announce that following this weekend, we will cease all Hawaii cruises and all other Delta Queen riverboat cruises and coastal voyages. In the Spring of 2002, we intend to resume scheduled operations on the Mississippi Queen."
