United offer a common rated fare from here to Uruguay - same price as to Buenos Aires and Santiago. We took that Santiago one last month, and think we might fly their UA Uruguay service next month.
The UA flight goes MIA-EZE-MVD so we may kill a couple days in EZE one way. I know the Argentine Peso has crashed, but have no clue about Uruguay's currency weakness/strength - any input?
Any if we give ourselves a couple of days there is there much to see in Montevideo and environs?

Sure, Montevideo and environs would be worth a few days.
You can walk or taxi cheaply around the real old town area and the newer old town. The plazas and architectural styles are interesting. The hotels (and everything else) are very cheaply priced since the economy is in a bad state. The people are very friendly.
You can take a bus tour to head out to the beaches toward Punta del Este. I didn't think the beaches were worth it from a layin-in-the-sand standpoint, but it is interesting to see the sights there and along the way. Colonia de Sacramento is a good day trip by boat from either MVD or EZE.

How long is the boat ride?
I'm assuming there is customs entering Colonia from EZE?
I'm also going to take the ferry when I go back in Nov. Can't wait !!!

I mentioned in another topic that you posted in, that MVD was a good place to spend a couple days & I will say it again here. It is a fairly cheap place, maybe slightly higher than B.A., but still cheap by U.S. or OZ standards on everything except electronics (not sure why you would go to Uruguay to buy electronics but I figured i'd throw that in).
As mentioned by the above poster if you get bored the two-hour drive east to Punta Del Este is a great option. The city has a great nightlife & the Conrad Hotel is the best choice there as it has a casino inside.
If you go you'll have a good time, however making the journey from Australia to Uruguay and only Uruguay may prove a long way to go for nothing incredible.
*As a side note Uruguay does receive more tourists every year than any other South American country.

Make sure to go Punta Del Este if in the summer. Very fun and crowded beach city (as opposed to Porto Alegre, which is always empty and boring in the early days of the year, as you could see).

Was in MVD earlier this month. Fly into EZE, take a fast boat to Colonia & Montevideo.
It aint Buenos Aires http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif Do a day trip, if you like what you see, by all means check out of your hotel in BsAs. This was you are hedging our bet http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif

We are planning to go mid October or so. United flies MIA-EZE-MVD. But they tell me today we can't have a STOPOVER in EZE but we CAN open jaw. So this option of making our own way to MVD is good. That is a day trip?

One hour on the Catamaran. Buenos Aires to montevideo is around 65-70 miles, on the other side of the river. My local guide arranged for all the ferry boat details. The ride was a hoot. Check on the latest Visa req. for Aussies.
