I am wondering what the best way to get to Fukuoka is. Could I fly to KIX or NRT and then take a train or some other method of transportation from there? How else can I get there, flying to F U K seems to be quite expensive.

You could take the train from Tokyo or Osaka, but won't save much in the process.

From Tokyo to Hakata (Fukuoka's main station), the fastest trains take about 5 hours, and cost Y23,560 one way in 2nd class, Y7,440 more in 1st class. To that add the NRT-Tokyo transfer.

From Osaka to Hakata, budget 2:30 hours and about Y15,000 in 2nd class one way, on top of the KIX-Shin Osaka transfer.

If you want to take the train, it will probably be worthwhile buying a Japan Rail Pass. Info and prices on JR passes at:

Two alternatives would be:
- purchasing your domestic flight in Japan, or separately through your travel agent; I don't recall them being especially expensive.
- flying to Seoul, as KE has inexpensive flights into Fukuoka. Be aware that Fukuoka immigration is by far the fussiest in Japan.
