Some friends have suggested that we make a trip to NYC over new years eve. They have not seen the times square/ball drop thing, and even though I have it has been a number of years. Any advice on where to stay?
I remember that security was tight getting to the viewing area when I was there, I can only imagine what it will be like this year. We are thinking it would be nice to have a place that we could get out to the street and watch without having to stand outside all day with no restroom, etc. Is this possible?
I do like the idea of supporting NYC tourism at this time, if for no other reason than to make a statement to the terrorists that they cannot change our lifestyle.
Any advice would be appreciated.

we were there last year and stayed at the Paramount right off Times Square and had a terrific time...close enogh to walk back for a bathroom break and a warm toddy...great Ian Shrager hotel with friendly staff although typical tiny NYC rooms...think we paid about 250/night...

We've stayed at the Holiday Inn Wall Street last year. Great new business hotel with availability for new years eve and friendly service but a little bit far away from Times Square (not a problem if traveling by metro). Rooms were around 200$. Not shure if this location is still a good tip as it's near to ground zero.
Last year we didn't really get near to Times Square as we arrived there at around 9 p.m. Some locals said that for Times Square we had to arrive at about 2-4 p.m...

You will be able to find excellent deals no matter where you stay. There are loads of hotels so I don't know where to begin. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif
I've only seen the ball fall once and that was in Times Square, out amongst the thousands, and was 17. Good age to do that! http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/wink.gif

The best view of Times Square and the ball dropping, is actually in Foleys Fish House restaurant in the Renaissance NY hotel. They're usually reasonable for New Years Eve, and not too many people realize that restaurant is the best seat in NYC at midnight, low key place.
Try http://www.mesuite.com for rooms. All suite hotel company. No points or miles, but they'll be more reasonable than the big brands. The Southgate hotel on 31st and 7th Ave would be the best location.

I just received a letter from the Renaissance in Times Square regarding New Years. They are charging $399/person for their New Year's Eve package. This does not include a room!
And there is also a special "private" New Years Eve party package too at the "W" Times Square! http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif
The cost is $399. on 12/27-30 '01 and $499. on 12/31/'01 with a two night stay requirement.
Also, ten percent of New Years Party Package will be donated to the Twin Towers Fund.

Hi, I called the Renaissance to see whats up with the price.
The $399 per person doesn't include a room, but it does include full open bar, dinner, live entertainment, champagne toast, and dancing, plus the great view of Times Square. Compared to other venues (that wouldn't have the view) that's about right. On New Years in NYC, you'll drop that much on the bar alone somewhere else.

Of course, there are plenty of other places in NYC, and I'm sure everyone can find something for their own tastes/budgets. I'm just making the best suggestion I can think of. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif Cheers!
