Among New York's Christmas gifts are a new museum in an old building and an old museum in a new home.
The new museum is Neue Galerie New York on upper Fifth Avenue, dedicated to German and Austrian fine and decorative art from the early 20th century. Art of major historical significance is installed in a luxurious, brick-and- limestone mansion built in 1914.
In midtown, on West 53rd Street, the 40-year-old American Folk Art Museum (formerly the Museum of American Folk Art) moved from its storefront space near Lincoln Center (which remains a branch and a shop) and opened a new $22 million building next door to the Museum of Modern Art on Tuesday. The eight- level building increases the museum's capacity nearly sixfold.
The Neue Galerie, named for a predecessor in 1920s Vienna, is headed by Ronald S. Lauder, chairman of cosmetics giant Estee Lauder International. Lauder is also chairman of the Museum of Modern Art and a former ambassador to Austria.
Information: American Folk Art Museum, (212) 265-1040 or www.folkartmuseum.org; (http://www.folkartmuseum.org;) Neue Galerie New York, (212) 628-6200 or www.neuegalerie.org. (http://www.neuegalerie.org.)
