I'd really like to visit Vegas with my wife from around 29th Dec. to 2nd Jan.
I've been to LAS first time with friends in October and was mostly impressed.
I didn't find affordable casino-hotels for this period of time. My favourite would be the Venetian or the Bellagio. But they offer rooms for up to 1.000$/night...
Has anybody a tip for me?
Airtravel seems to be affordable, but not the hotels...

The Holiday Inn offers a two night package for $555 I believe. Three nights is $666, and four nights is $777, and includes a decent dinner. It isn't the Ritz, but it is clean, comfortable and well situated.

Christmas is traditionally a very weak time for tourism in Las Vegas, so that period of time (generally around 12/21 through 12/27 or so) is pretty cheap for hotel rooms. On the other hand, the tourist trade spikes dramatically upward during the New Years period (generally 12/27 through 1/2 or 1/3 or so), and hotel rooms that went for $25 a few days earlier can shoot up to $300 or more on New Years Eve!
Thumper seems to be scooting out of Las Vegas before New Years, while you are sticking around. In my personal opinion (and with no disrespect intended to Thumper), SpuddBrother's rates seem more realistic for the New Year's period you've selected.
The bottom line is: Your have chosen absolutely the most expensive time of the year to visit Las Vegas. Do a little comparison shopping on the internet, and check how much a room would be during your planned period (12/29 - 1/2) compared to what you would pay if you went during another four day period. You might find it economically advantagous to move to another date, particularly the week before.
I hate to discourage anyone from visiting Las Vegas during New Years. I hear it's a lot of fun. I'm just I'm too cheap to try it.

Hmmm...
I found a Courtyard Marriott 8 miles out for 79$ so I think about this for the first two days and on Jan. 1st moving to the strip for then really good rates starting from 45$ for the casino-hotels. Rental cars seem to be available for low rates.
The least expensive rates for Dec. 30/31 in one of the better hotels on the strip would be around 199-279$ per night.
Are there any special places to go on New Years eve?

Try a package on expedia. I just got a really good deal for a weekend for 200 for airfare and hotel at MGM.

If I was in Vegas then, I'd want to be standing in front of the Bellagio Hotel with a bottle of Champagne, watching the water show!!!

Just found out my family will be DISTRESSED PASSENGERS new years eve -- either in SanDiego or Las Vegas. This is due to Continental cancelling all NewYearsEve flights from West Coast back home to CLE. My connection out of LAS was cancelled. They offered a 3 hours longer itinery on United or Delta.. but I am leaning towards taking a chance with hotel vouchers in LAS. If no airport hotel will accept vouchers on NewYears Eve( either SAN or LAS) then how much cash does CO have to pay under rule 240? Any advice appreciated - What would you do? New Itinery is to arrive in LAS at 1025pm and fly out at 725 am. I suppose I could try and book a hotel in LAS but am not familiar, and actually want to keep my out of pocket expense down after a 1week vacation.

CO has no obligation to you other than to accomodate you on another CO flight or, if that is not acceptable to you, refund the unused portion of your ticket.

I was not inclined to jump on offered united/delta flights because of additional airport/plane time of 3 hours. Hard on the kids. Also I do have CO Gold status and have good seat assignments for the family (with the possibility of 1-2 upgrades). Seating for that long of a flight is important.
Actually hotel vouchers SAN or LAS were offered. I believe any delay of several (4?) hours due to CANCELLATION (other than weather) in connecting city between hours of 10pm and 6am results in hotel vouchers. Problem is voucher is not a guaranteed room and I dont feel like wandering the streets all night or sleeping in the airport with my family on new years eve.
Any useful advice would be appreciated...

I found no rooms in the city of Las Vegas for 12/31 under 150$ for 1* and 200$ for 3*-hotels - even at the airport. But most hotels have minimum stays of three nights for a booking on 12/31!!! So I don't think that those hotels would accept vouchers.
But wouldn't a stay at LAS for new years eve be worth it if you have no extra expenses for the flight?

Just a reminder of what a bust LAS was last New Year's. They said that people wanted refunds, drunks were urinating in the street and it was the most disappointing celebration anywhere. I love Vegas and go several times a year, but would never consider going for New Years. Apparently, the hotels have forgotten what a disaster they were last year or their prices would be more realistic.

I've read that some hotels charged 1000$ and more/night last year. So this year seems to be more realistic; but it's still much money for my small purse.
Could you give some advise what hotels to stay at based on your experiance last year?

I just posted a New Years deal at the Flamingo in the Las Vegas Promos (http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/Forum5/HTML/000039.html) thread.
