View Full Version : 12/31 is FAST approaching....anyone in 'A WORLD OF HURT' to qualify?

Maybe Christmas/Hanukah/Kwanza - and the 'gift of status' for a few - can come courtesy of FT this year!

Well, the deadline for reaching status goals is less than 30 days away! And with the reduced schedules, the cheap X-mas seats are now already few and far between. So it looks like its gonna get tougher and tougher to reach status (cheaply) by years end.

I was wondering if there's anyone out there who is really in 'a world of hurt.' Someone who, perhaps, REALLY needs a little FTer buddy help - and who REALLY needs that status.

This thread is ONLY for the most desperate!

And maybe ONLY the most difficult challenges, please...???

(No reason to post a need for 2,000 miles or 4 segments here! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/thumbsup.gif

There are alot of savvy people who regularly contribute to this board. I was thinking that if FTers combine our collective resources...that we might be able to help spread a little Christmas cheer...???

From those seeking advise, FTers will need to know:

1. No. of miles/segments that you have at present.
2. How many more miles/segments will it take to reach your goal.
3. Where are you are based.
4. Whether or not there is some place specific that you would really like to go.
5. Dates you are available to travel are must a must - in both directions, please!

(Please do not post a request unless you provide us with these dates - cause it's what FTers need to help you the most!).

6. Also, it would help if you mentioned the budget, please!

Come on fellow FTers, jump in and help spread a little (lasting) Christmas cheer!

Isn't the 'gift of status' appropriate for this time of year?

Am I sick for wishing that CO had some sort of higher level than Plat?? It just seems all so anticlimactic... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif Great idea, in some sick way I wish I needed to make use of it!

I've heard from a little birdie that CO is toying with that very idea...a higher level than PLAT. It's close to happening.

Have 35K on NWA need 50K to make gold. Leave from MPLS. Can travel most days as I have vacation. Either NWA or Codeshare CO flights would work. (For work related reasons, cannot leave the continental US, cannot get trapped abroad. Need to be able to drive back if God forbid another 911 event would happen.) Have 3 or 4 vacation days left, thus, combination of weekday and weekends would work, but somewhat prefer to go out Sat and back Sunday. Travel up to 12/22 is possible, after that not possible. Will be paying for flights and stays myself so minimizing cost is important. Prefer to go anyplace warm, Florida, New Orleans, Texas, AZ, CA. Leave from MSP. Any suggestions?

It would appear that you need 15K. Can you be a little more specific?

Are you already Gold and attempting to retain your current status? As a silver/gold member you may have received info regarding the Y, B, and M promotional elite challenge in the mail. If so, did you pre-register for this promotion (hoping against all odds http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif)?

If you did not pre-register, could you check with WorldPerks to see if your account was flagged for that promotion?

ATL to AirTran cities is $80 one way, including MSP. MSP-ATL-someplace and back in the same day would obviate the need for a hotel, but at $80 a leg, 15,000 miles worth could be expensive.

I am NW silver and need about 5,200 miles for gold. I am free after noon on 12/19, and just maybe from Dec 7-9. I can leave from BOS BDL PVD or MHT. I can't go very close to Christmas as my wife would kill me. I need either NW or CO miles to qualify and would love to do it for less than maybe $300. I have been all over dream maps. I have one trip on NW planned already. Maybe two short quickies for 3 for gold, or one coast to coast will do. Thanks for any help.

You can do a day trip to ATL (such as Dec. 20) for $150+tax, such as BOS-EWR-CLE-ATL; ATL-EWR-BOS. Repeat another day.

tvl4free, finally a chance to use your powers for good instead of evil http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif, and make a lot of Europeans very happy in the process. Here's a challenge a lot of us are struggling with, and your magic with a CRS could be invaluable:

You will, no doubt, have read about the fantastic promotion that KLM is running. Most of us are in the same boat -- we need the full 12000 FD points or 20 segments in the next six months. Any flight within the FD program qualifies.

While I can usually work my magic building 8 and 10 segment runs with FFAssistant (thanks, MJG!) I'm struggling to squeeze extra segments out when it comes to KL/NW runs.

Realistically, I'm assuming we need to finish our travel before March, when fares traditionally creep back up. Most of us can only travel on weekends, although being able to avoid the Saturday night stay requirement would be a bonus for many.

Selfishly, a STN/LGW/LCY/LHR start would be best for me, but others need fares ex-CDG, FRA, and AMS. I'm happy to qualify on segments or points, but am obviously looking for the best deal. Right now, two trans-atlantics with connections are looking like the best option, but you might tell me differently...

So, tvl4santa, have I been a good boy this year? I've apologised for that whole foot-and-mouth thing (and the related politician's disease, foot-in-mouth), and that mad-cow prank was just a bit of harmless fun.

Have you got something to put into my stocking?

There's milk and cookies in it for you, and a carrot for your reindeer. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

VERY nice job opushomes!

At the moment, it would seem that your proposal is the best deal 'out there' for our new friend, OB one! It's cheap, and it meets his mileage requirements.

Earlier today, I had thought about your proposal too. Unfortunately, your itinerary is not for the dates requested - but then again, maybe OB one will be able to modify his days off...???

If so, perhaps you've given 'the bud' a very nice Christmas! Thanks! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

For this weekend, Dec 7-8, the best deal that I could find was $261 from BOS-LAS via DTW and MEM (taxes have become a killer)... and this would give OB one just over 5,300 miles. This might be bookable online either thru NWA or Orbitz using the multi-city function.

Opushomes and tvl4free, a great big THANKS for your help. I ended up booking PVD PDX on Dec 18 for $190, leaves 6 am, back at 11 pm. It will be tight at PDX (just over 1 1/2 hours on ground) but I am hoping the same plane just turns around from PDX and returns to DTW. Otherwise I will have to accept whatever I can get and that may be a mistake, but we live and learn.

I had tried this itinerary on other dates via dream maps, but it kept showing sold out so I din't bother going to nwa.com to look. With opushomes advice about the early December availability, I just had to look around nwa.com a little deeper and reschedule one work day. Of course, I will be a zombie on Wednesday, but I think I can muddle through.

Again Thank you and tv4free you are right, opushomes had given a bud a great Christmas gift. Thanks for your help.

Do not worry about not being able to get back. In all probability it is the same aircraft. I assume that you are coming in on NW375 and out on NW376. We are down to 5 or 6 flights each day. (from 7 or 8). You should arrive at C17 or C19 and depart from the same gate. It will be unnecessary for you to leave this area and deal with the National Guard and the "I want to feel your body" security bunch.

There are food, books, magazines, sundries, Wendy's (I categorize them differently from food) and espresso (or coffee) available in the area ajacent to the gates. You can even walk to the beginning of C (at the confluence of A&B), Do Not exit past security, and visit our new flight museum. There are also some attractive pieces of art placed strategically on the new C concourse.

Please remember also that Oregon has no sales tax and all prices in the airport are the same as in the city. (almost true, because snack paks do cost considerably more than in the grocery or at Costco.) If you do want to do some quick shopping for gifts, you do have to exit security and return, but it should not be a big deal. Just scope out the line before leaving the secure area.

Located in the Oregon Marketplace are Norm Thompson, Real Mother Goose (one of America's best contemporary galleries-&, yes, they ship), "Made in Oregon", Powell's Books.

Enjoy your $190 adventure.

tvl4free or any other fellow FT'er,

need yr help - please see below re my onepass acc:

1. No. of miles/segments at present.

Mileage Balance: 30,073
2001 Elite Mileage Balance: 35,496
2001 Elite Segments: 40

2. How many more miles/segments to reach goal: 14,504 Elite miles or 20 Elite segments to turn GOLD (actually a little less, since there are a couple of flts missing post).

3. I'm based out of NY (EWR IS FINE....)

4. Whether or not there is some place specific that you would really like to go: NOT REALLY, MAYBE SAN DIEGO

5. Dates available to travel in both directions: dec 14,15,16,21,22,23

FYI - I have made a reservation on NWA.COM via e-cert for $296 total from EWR-CDG (departing 12/14 6pm returning 12/16 1:35pm). As you know, I must issue on 12/5 by midnite or risk loosing the fare....therefore, FT'ers out there..time is of the essence!!! Tks

Anyway...if my math is right, I should earn some valuable miles (more than 20.000) due to the double miles promo + online booking bonus.

Question - when using a NWA.com e-cert (not sure which fare it is booked under but I'm certain it's not K...) can I earn OP miles instead of Worldperk's??? If yes, than I guess I would be looking at only one rountrip to Paris....to upgrade me to gold on CO.

Maybe I'm confused by your post, but I don't understand how just one RT NYC to PAR is going to UG your status to Gold. The RT EWR-PAR mileage via DTW and AMS is only 9,864... and that added to your balance, does not 50K make.

Maybe you should ask your TvlSanta for one more transcon RT...??? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

The experience of others with the e-cert 'mileage credit deal' might be better answered in the NW forum. But here, can we assume you're using the NW FRA/LON/PAR promo fare?

If so, that e-promo specifically states that NW mileage is given. I can only assume that CO credit is given as well... In fact, the only NW fares that I know of that don't give credit are the weekend Cyber Saver deals.

You might want to make a dual 'jingle, jingle' to NW and CO, just to double check.

But tvl4free would say that, overall, Christmas in Gold is looking pretty good for you this year.

Humm... presents in Gold... has a nice ring to it, don't you agree? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Happy holidays!

Well, thinking and doing 26K are two different things... so I'll be interested to see how it goes. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

26K is like way more miles than most people travel on a RTW ticket!!!

It would certainly be more of a marathan - rather than the typical 'garden variety' run.

Anyway, I'm thinking it could be done if started immediately in about 4-5 days for something like $1,100 - $1,200 bucks, give or take.

Bare in mind that this would be 'last minute fared' travel! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

No world of hurt here. I already received my letter from UA saying that they're comping me to 1K next year, but I figure for my own psychic satisfaction, I should still fly the mileage run I have planned for Dec. 15 from Chicago to San Francisco and back, which will give me approximately 103,000 for the year. It only cost $200 and what's the knowledge that I'm a true 1K is worth? Priceless.

Dec 5, 01, 11:01 am
Postponer The EWR CDG fare you are contemplating booking is a V fare (to find this you have to buy the ticket or look at your confirmation email, nowhere does NWA.com tell you this beforehand, and the NW CSR told me she doesn't know the rules for miles even though she knew it was a V fare, search NW for the same topic)

This fare does earn WP miles, thus I assume it earns OP miles too if you desire to collect those instead. CO does not double NW metal flight miles and neither does NW double CO metal miles, so be careful. If WP gold is your objective and your miles are in CO, then you just have to suck up the loss of 18,000 miles. I did this recently on a PVD SEA CO metal flight, I hated it, but had no real choice.

On the V fare, the flight is not upgradable with miles, but the flights look pretty empty so maybe you can stretch out in back, where I will be on 12/11 and 12/16.

Opushomes, Thanks for all the info. I hadn't planned on exiting the security area especially with such a short wait. I am coming in on flight 811, out on 814, just over 1 1/2 hours. My worry is that the 811 will be late, as it is only rated at 60% on time, but both flights are A320s so I assume thay are the same plane.

My plan is a quick cold beer (well maybe more than one while waiting). I would be HAPPY to buy you one (or more) if you are in the area.

Well, I found out yesterday that I would not qualify for 1K under UAs secondary rules, even though their press release clearly states I would. So I need about 17000 miles by the end of the year to shore up my status. I will be getting about 2000 miles for Christmas, and I could go to Tampa this week for 3K more. I would prefer a long haul though, that would get me all the miles at once, preferably $600 or less. I have one SWU left that I'd like to use, but that is not required.

Well, that is the challenge, the good thing is that I am extremely flexible about dates. I can leave from DEN or COS.

I normally travel every week, so the 1K status has been indispensible. With all that has happened, my travel in Q4 dried up though.

I've analyzed flights for the last two days, but the best I've come up with is MUC or Tokyo. Not quite enough.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

Cheap is the wrong words to use with tvl4free, so pack the sleigh - and the reindeer will take you to BHM! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

BHM-SLC RT is $158, $184 with taxes. The following routing should be used: BHM-ATL-SLC-CVG-BHM to get you home in just one day. 7 day advance. No overnite stay. T/W/SAT travel, which means the only two days left for travel are 12/12 and 12/15. Miles earned total 4,034.

So you have to jump on this one if you like it.

A couple of other ATL based ideas, but certain people monitor - so e-me if you want details.

I had hoped to have a little help with this one, but I guess I'll have to take a stab at it all alone!

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Originally posted by mspflyer1:
Have 35K on NWA need 50K to make gold. Leave from MPLS. Prefer to go anyplace warm, Florida... CA...</font>

I spoke with a bud at WorldPerks yesterday and, at the moment, there is no plan to extend status for those who didn't qualify this year, on into 2002. While we hate to see a fellow FTer fall by the wayside, if you'll just move aside... any of us will be perfectly happy to take your FC seat. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Seriously tho, 15K is alot of miles as you know - as it actually equals about half way around the earth. I'm sorry, too, that you don't yet feel comfortable enough to travel internationally, as that would be the easiest, fastest, and safest way to put you back on track for Gold.

15K requires at least 2 trascon RTs. But because you are 'kind of' located mid-continent, you would have to place yourself on either coast. From MSP 'getting properly positioned' could be rather expensive, as most of the best fares to the coast are currently requiring a 2 week advance purchase.

Therefore, I tried to look at this delima not only in terms of the miles and the 3-4 vacations days that you have available, but also in terms of the cost. I noticed that you mentioned that you wouldn't mind visiting Florida and/or CA. So, why not take in both?

If saving some change is important, and you could cash-in 20-25K miles and position yourself in SAN late on 12/13... you could conceivably accomplish your goal, and be back in MSP by lunch on the 18th. You would need to purchase two 7 day advance CO RT tkts from SAN to FLL... which would mean that you would have to buy your 2 tkts. no later than tomorrow. You would need to use some 'creative routings' to max out the miles you can harvest - like via LAX and EWR... plus a few more.. A good travel agent should be able to do this for you. I looked at what was available and what I came up with was out late, late PM on the 13th, arriving FLL late on the 14th, back on the 15th, out again to FLL on the 16th, and back to SAN on the 17th. Depending on the day, the fares were $198 - $238. With taxes and fess, the total that I came up with was $515.50. Miles totaled 16,242 base. I think we would double that for NW Gold. Forget traveling to FL after the 19th, unless you plan on using the reindeer, cause there's (pretty much) no cheap seats to be had.

Let me just say that this 'mini-vacation' is not for the faint of heart! But a few fellow FTers do it, time and time again.

This was the best I could come up with - under the parameters that were outlined.

Season's greetings to ya!

Out of ATL you can try to take advantage of "sale" fares to various eastern cities that don't require overnight stay, only 7 day advance purchase by 12/12. For example, you can do ATL-CVG-DAY-CVG-ATL for 4,000 base miles at a cost of about $125. Do that 2x and you have your miles. You might even be able to do it within one-day. I know that total cost of $210 is higher than tvl4free's $184 to SLC but it's an alternative.

Re: all the posts about needing x miles and getting double miles before a certain date, I thought the double miles didn't count towards status. Is this only for certain airlines? I'm on Alaska and now I don't remember reading that they didn't count toward status. I guess I just assumed.

Of course, I had already already thought about that one, but since you brought it up, this might be slightly better: ATL-LEX-CVG-DAY on the outbound, with DAY-CVG-LEX/TYS-ATL on the return. $143 RT. The 6 segs can be done in one day. On another day, one could do one GSO or RDU RT for $88 bucks or a little less. The 'powers that be' might be alerted to this one, thus my reasoning for liking the previous 4 seg, and less expensive,'all in one day' adventure! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

tv4free - thanks! You are really a master of air domain http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif! One can learn a lot from your posts and I'm trying hard to do just that.
Of cause thanks to everyone else for suggestings and ideas - looks like I'll be doing this on 12/12.

12/07 - thanks to tv4free help I was able to book it: BHM - SLC, gives me enough miles for GM!

I'll only be in Singapore 7 hours, any ideas? Also, anyone have a SWU they aren't going to use? I only have one left. (Thoought I'd try!)

Thanks for all the help here!

One other thing for those looking...this weekend you can go to PVG. Leave of Friday and come back Sunday or Monday. A little pricey (812 from DEN) but over 14K miles, and that gets doubled.

Another option for those needing DL Medallion requalification miles is the DL Amex Platinum card; $135 gets you 10,000 base miles, and you don't have to hassle with security, surly FA's, and greasy snack mix! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

It could have been done for about $135 plus tax by segs... but poof, the fare is gone.

United just changed many of the fares to 14 day advance purchases and the cheaper ones now require either a SAT nite stay or a 3 nite stay, depending on the market.

Can you change the dates... so we can look for something else... or RU set on the double miles? If set on the dates and miles (with only a one nite stay)$400-500 with tax may be required.

You might want to check out UAL's web specials - which includes a SFO-NRT RT for $ 338 this week.

Assuming that your 11,695 is reduced by 5,322 for SEA-TPA (via IAH) and TPA-YHZ for 3,224 (via EWR...counting double miles promo for both), you need 3,149 to get there. Since you want to fly virtually last mintue, try TPA-IAH-MSY on CO for $235. If my math's correct, including the double miles it's 5,148. Let us know how it works out for you.

MSPFlyer needs 4500 miles. Try this one, It yields more than the required miles, although it does not qualify as cheap, it gets you there. Rent a car and go skiing in Oregon or Washington for a couple of days. Or look for AS web specials and see if you can up the ante.

[The idea here is to pick up an extra 2000 miles by doing short hops on each end of the itinerary. Because you are in MSP - an essentially sole-sourced hub - it sometimes is cheaper to drive a short distance to an alternate and connect back through your normal originating airport. This is the case here.
You can cut the duration of this trip, but the dates that I tried upped the cost by approx. $100. This may be better than the extra time. It is your choice.]

MSP is tough since it's a NW hub. The cheapest route would be to find someone who has an infamous NWA Discount Travel Cert (PDxxx). Zone pricing is around $200 rt - 7 day advance, sat stay but the price is right. If you can't find one of those, I saw the following:

341.00 USD Total including taxes

Continental 5782 | 535
Aircraft: D95 | 73G Sat - Dec 15, 2001 Minneapolis/ St. Paul, MN (MSP) 1:23 PM Los Angeles, CA (LAX) 7:35 PM

Aircraft: 73G | 320 Sun - Dec 16, 2001 Los Angeles, CA (LAX) 10:35 AM Minneapolis/ St. Paul, MN (MSP) 7:54 PM

It's a little high, but worth 5,348 miles. Good luck,

mspflyer1,

Now you know that you've made your TvlSanta work overtime, but that's pretty much routing these days! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

You'll want to pack a small bag and dress appropriately, of course, cause maybe CO will bump you UpFront4free. This deal is from MSP-SFO. The dates that were available were 12/15 outbound, returning on 12/16. Plug in the following routing: MSP-IAH-SFO-CLE-MSP.

The fare is $212.50, no more, no less... and it earns 5,467 miles... but it has a comfort zone, and that's just what you need!

Happy holidays to you! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Will a two segment round trip do? If so, the cheapest M fares that I can find on NW are MEM-LIT for $180 and MEM-STL for $216. All require only a 1 day stay if flown 12/26--31, otherwise a Sat. nite. You also might be able to nest a couple MEM-LIT tickets to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak.

Quick Facts: I fly NW, I live in MSP, and I am a complete idiot.

With travel booked from December 23 to 31 "figured in", I will have 74,280 miles on NW this year. I made an error in computing part of the 200% promo, leaving me 720 miles short. I just realized this. Good grief.

It should be easy, right? However, the only day off I have from now until I leave on other trips (BIL and SIN) on Dec 23rd is December 22nd. I have to go somewhere, ANYWHERE on December 22nd to make Plat(NW rounds up anything under 500 OW to 500 miles, making 1,000 miles the min. for any RT flight). I leave just after 9:00am on the 23rd from MSP, so I could overnight if I get back to MSP early on the 23rd.

My plan as of now is to do MSP-MDW on NW for $151, priceline some digs for the evening of the 22nd, and get back to MSP at about 8:30am. Tight. Maybe too tight. Total cost about $200, which is insane for 1,000 status miles, but worth it for Plat. (Right?)

My other idea is, well, less straightforward. I will be in SIN Dec 28, 29, and 30. KLM appears to fly SIN to Jakarta. Perhaps a quick RT while I am at SIN?

My apologies if this is too prosaic a quandry, but do I really have to pay $200 for 1,000 miles??? That is the worst mileage run ever!

Thanks.

WRONG http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif... in that your plan appears too tight... and involves an unnecessary overnite expense. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/thumbsdown.gif

Maybe you could bite the bullet on this one and just buy a RT 4 seg 14 day advance ticket from Brainerd to St. Clould via MSP with outbound late on the 22nd, and the 2 seg return sometime early next year. BRD-MSP is 114 miles and MSP-STC is 62. Voila! 1,000 miles for this year... and 1,000 miles for next.

Make the return Monday thru noon TH to get the best fare.

Have your TvlElf drive you to Brainerd and drop you off. By the time he makes the 59 airmile trip to STC... you'll be a 1,000 miles richer! RT Fares should run around $163 plus tax. $187 total.

The two segments with the cxn shouldn't take more than just a few hours.

If the fares out of STC are competitive with MSP, it might be a good idea for you to try and 'tag-end' a few of your trips next year.

It's an ONTARIO kind of thing!

TPA-EWR, for late today ONLY priced on the CO site for $137 RT as a web special. Out today 12/8 and back 12/10-11. Might be a way to at least pick up a few extra miles. Rest you could do later...? Try booking TPA-CLE-EWR for the extra miles.

The only other thing that I was able to find within the budget was out of MIA. MIA-LIM RT via PTY on COPA was $388. No advance purchase, 3 day minimum stay, out on the 9th or 10th, back on the 12th or 13th. 5,252 miles. You could even do about a 10 hour layover in Panama City outbound... and perhaps visit the Miraflores locks... or visit the My Name is Panama clothing store... located in and across from the El Panama hotel. They are the only major clothing manufacturer that specializes in mola clothing featuring molas of the Kuna Indians from San Blas.

tvl4free, you are the man.

I had to slightly modify your suggestion due to the trip from St Cloud to Brainerd, even though it is two segments, still only counts as 500 miles. Thus, I needed a RT this year for the 1,000 miles. Your St. Cloud suggestion got me thinking. I then booked a RT from St Cloud to MSP to get me to MSP for my trip out on the 23rd, with a return from MSP which works with my return from SIN. And when I say it fits, it fit perfectly!

The absolute killer part is that it was $159, AND the St Cloud airport is faster for me to get to than MSP! (I live in a NW burb of the metro). I never thought about St. Cloud before, and it appears that long term parking is cheaper (I think $4 per day less, saving me $32 right there from Dec 23 to 31st).

So, in review:

1. Easier, faster, no traffic drive to the airport
2. Cheaper and easier parking
3. No overnight required, so no hotel expense
4. No tight connections
5. Saves the 22nd completely, as added flights blend into existing flights.
6. tvl4free is the man

Thanks.

tvl4free,

Your suggestion just gets better...

I have found out I was told incorrectly that parking at the little St Cloud airport is $4 per day less than MSP. I called back during regular hours and talked to the admin. office. I was told there is a lot next to the airport which is FREE, and that long term parking is just fine...

So, instead of eight days of parking at $10.50 per day ($84), my parking exp. is zero. The $159 St Cloud - MSP RT just became a $74 flight ($159 - $84).

I love it!

Hi,

I'm currently UA 1P (and have already requalified for 1P for next year). However I suddenly got some more vacation time that I could use and I thought about going for 1K on UA before the end of the year. I'm currently at 50485 miles and will have about 53340 miles by the end of the year (after Xmas trip). So I'd have to fly 47,000 miles to make to 1K in about 2 weeks. I looked into 2 or 3 runs between IAD (and other east coast cities) and SIN, but a lot of flights were sold out, etc. Then I came across this thread and thought for the heck of it, I'd throw this challenge out and see if anyone can think of something "reasonable"? ;-) I'd like to start whatever runs on Dec 19th, but could start as early as 15th (yeah, yeah, probably way too late). I have a flight AUS-IAD on 22nd and DCA-ORD-AUS on 26th, so I need to be back in AUS by morning of 22nd. I wouldn't mind spending up to about 700-750 dollars per round-trip...

Can anyone meet this challenge? ;-)

I see that this is your first post, so welcome to FT!

In cases like this, you should have - at least - posted an anonymous e-mail address, cause alot of FTers won't respond without it - to try and help you out. Since we take time out of our busy day to try and help rescue you, this is simply the most courteous, 'Christmasy thing to do.'

But given the spirit of this thread and that it's Christmas, tvl4free will throw a few thoughts your way. As you appear to be aware, the issue is no longer one one of getting the cheapest fare - but rather one of getting the miles needed at the lowest cost that UA is going to force you to pay. As you may know, the cheap seats to anywhere are few and far between.

With that as the given, here is a simple, quick and easy alternative, and it appears that you're in luck.

There is what looks to be a special 'no advance purchase fare,' valid Dec 15 and 16 only, from SBA to PDX. If you make cxns in LAX and SFO that will give you six segments RT and 3,000 miles. Not only should that do the trick for you... but there actually appears to be plenty of 'W' class availability on the dates that you mentioned. Here is a sample itinerary that might work for you:

1*UA5277W 15DEC SA SBALAX HK1 425P 513P/O
2 UA1818W 15DEC SA LAXSFO HK1 645P 757P/X
3 UA1828W 15DEC SA SFOPDX HK1 1015P 1151P/X

4 UA1857W 16DEC SU PDXSFO HK1 820A 955A/O
5 UA1809W 16DEC SU SFOLAX HK1 1030A 1156A/X
6*UA5723W 16DEC SU LAXSBA HK1 1250P 132P/X

The fare is $218.00 incl. tax and the fare basis is WOE0HLN. Note that you might be able to dicount this by 15% if you have the appropriate coupon, and the dates are not blacked out for its use.

From your new FT buddies, we send you best wishes for a Happy Holiday... and may you have a great New Year, too! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

You can reach status by miles or points (or 200 segs ). http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif I have been EXP for a few years now..and the perks you will receive as a Top Tier AA flyer..access to the amazing EXP desk..VIPOW's ...upgrade cleare`nce etc.re fanastic. There are 3 ways I would do it..you need 1 ORD-NRT RT..2 LHR runs or 4-5 long haul stateside runs..If you had qualified for the first time before Nov 30.you would have 16 VIPOW's. Also you might try ORD-MIA-DFW-NRT to maximize your milage. Perhaps tvl4free..our resident expert guru..can work some magic for you. Good luck..GO FOR IT!!

Hi,

3400 miles needed on United out of OAK or SFO (not sure if I can do SJC, which some of you already suggested).

Preferably to happen Dec 15/16 and under $250.

I'm having trouble finding an itinerary and figuring out the best way to book it. Expedia? UAL.com? Sorry for the 'newbie' post...

This would be my FIRST mileage run and I would hit Premier Exec...

Thanks.

Is that true? I have heard contradictory stories on the 8 vs. 16 VIPOWs. I was EXP in '00, PLT in '01 and will hit EXP on 12/30. Do I get 8 or 16 VIPOWs?

Just like in a box of Christmas candy, in a 'nested itinerary', the goodies are all wrapped up inside! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

The least expensive way (left) that I can think of to pick up 15K on AA would be to plant oneself in London - just after the holiday. So, this idea might not work for you.

Fares from Chicago to London are relatively cheap at present, and RT fares back to NYC are a special 'Christmas present' to the British, so to speak. You could buy a RT tkt from ORD to LON for $436 - and then a RT from LON-NYC for $327.. The total incl. tax would be about $763 and would earn 14,816 miles, approximately. Would this be enough?

Here's a sample that might work. Have your travel agent look for 'N' class.

1 AA 90N 28DEC FR ORDLHR SS1 855A 1030P/O

2 AA 131N 29DEC SA LHRJFK SS1 400P 650P/O
3 AA 142N 30DEC SU JFKLHR SS1 830A 815P/O

4 AA 87N 31DEC MO LHRORD SS1 1005A 1240P

CHILON 3950 LONNYC 3458 NYCLON 3458 LONCHI 3950

TOTAL 14816

Conceivably, a variation on the above idea, might be started on Dec 18th, but bare in mind that this has a 7 day advance purchase, which would mean that a plan would have to be finalized today. Also, a city other than NYC would have to be 'scouted out' as the seats from NYC back to London are already fully booked. A Saturday nite is required on each separate tkt.

Jingle, jingle, again. StatusSanta is on his way! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/thumbsup.gif

TvlSanta's deliver presents, not miracle's. For that, there are other specialists this time of year... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Status requires two things:

1. That one spend the requisite time in the sleigh, and:
2. That one 'pay the (adjusted) asking tolls'. Last minute Christmas tolls are always higher than at other times of the year (aren't the elves such greedy little, lovable souls?). http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

It would appear that you are willing to do No. 1, but not No. 2. Not even two trips to SIN would accomplish your mileage goals...and, no Star Alliance partner has any seats at all within the price range that was mentioned.

So, NO, NO, NO - not 1K this year!

But the good news is that now is the time to start planning your trips (and goals) for next year!

What I do not know..as in your case...if this benefit is available for first time EXPs or also EXPs who have fallen down to PLT and then requalify again..it seems to me I read a thread that said you will get all 16 again if you qualify before Nov. Thanks for that 'holiday gift' Tvl4free!

I actually JUST found the same itin you pointed out by poking around Expedia. Until today, I thought there was NO WAY without flying out of SJC, but I'm very excited now! Looks like I'll make 1P by next week afterall..

By the way, off-topic, but I'm very happy to have found this board. I grew up flying a lot as a kid (dad was a captain for JAL) and have always loved being in the air, but lately I hadn't flown much. I really started traveling consistently for the first time this year again, and quickly made Premier, and hopefully now PE after a few of SIN, LHR, and WLG trips out of SFO.

Thanks for all the insight and stories, everyone.

I've got a stumper. I'm 9,000 miles shy of Gold on American. (Yes, I'm new at this.) Is there any way to leave the evening of December 28, get back December 31, and squeeze out the miles needed? I can leave from SFO or OAK, and wouldn't mind spending my downtime in New York or D.C.

I wouldn't bother trying for a mileage run now. The prices are high for last minute runs, especially with the holiday season.

Why not do a mileage run first thing in January? You can easily make a weekend run to either ZRH or NRT with no hotel stay. Leave Friday night or Saturday morning and be back by Sunday night.

If you sign up for the Gold Challenge, a run to ZRH/NRT will easily get you the necessary 5k Q-points.

You can't get 9,000 miles going to NY or DC unless you do end-on-end (e.g., SFO-FLL via ORD, and FLL to LGA via ORD).

One round trip to LHR is $546.91. 12,074 miles via JFK. Leave SFO 10:00 PM Dec. 28, back Dec. 31 evening.

Ok, I have been lurking here on and off for better than a year, but it's time to get some help in person.

I was booted out of Premier & Premiere Emeritus, due to a job change with low travel and spent most of this year trying to get back. Got pretty far on consulting gigs, BUT lost all of my contracts since Sept 11. and have no where to go work wise. It also means I am low on cash. The United scoreboard says I am 4570 away from Premiere (again).

Membership level General Member
Miles needed for Premier ® Status 4570
I have 12 Segments
Current program balance 151951

I just need enough to pass the basic elite level. I am out of SJC. Need to be home 12/22 -12/26 - Could travel starting 12/15.

Would want to spend under $300 if possible. I guess popping in and out of Asia could work if it was cheap enough.

I am worried that any bonus miles will not count toward elite. I just saw the Mileslink article sent tonight that suggested you can get 8000 UA miles for $71 in magazines, WHICH SOUNDS GREAT but I doubt it would help me qualify for Premiere. I would be glad to buy my way out of this if that would work.

tvl4santa, you are on a roll. I'm looking for 4816 miles (or 11 segments) just to make lowly 2P on United. Currently have 20184 miles and 19 segments. I fly out of DEN, can travel outbound starting 12/28, return by 1/1 (although have to be home by 4 pm MST on 1/1 to watch CU in the Fiesta Bowl!) and would prefer to spend less than $300. Would love to visit a scenic place (warm or cold) if layover is necessary, otherwise no preference.

Cheers, happy holidays, and thanks for starting this exceedingly generous thread!

Well a simi-Christmassy idea for $251 SantaBucks just took a 'nose-deer' dive, cause it comes up short by 20 little tiny miles! (Don't ya just hate when the reindeer do that?).

So there are some other options:

1. You could pick up approximately 3,550 miles by flying OAK-DEN-GEG RT on the 15th and 16th. This is a no advance purchase fare of $154 with a fare basis of WOE0HLN and is basically valid on these dates only. This would leave you with 1,020 miles to go by the end of the year. If you could pick up 3 segments in the CA market by the 31st, this would add another 1,500 miles to your account and resolve this issue.

2.If you head on over to www.ual.com (http://www.ual.com) there is a weendend fare of $318 from SJC to IAD. With tax the total is $332. This deal requires outbound on the 15th and return on the 17th. Miles earned would = 4814 approximately.

Option No. 2 is probably best....cause TvlSantas think that 'WAY OVER' ... and everything done and over with... is like a Christmas present this time of year! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

M fares are the lowest priced fares that will qualify under this promotion. Usually, they have at Sat. nite stay requirement... and so one needs to find a way to work around that restriction.

BTW, glad to hear via e-mail that you can fly on the 23rd. There are a couple of M fare specials that day that don't require a Sat nite stay. On the 23rd, if you did a MEM-TUP turn followed immediately by a MEM-LIT turn... you could knock out two of the trips in one day... and get you back home by 4PM (a third turn is not possible that day http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif ) . These M fares are $176 and $190 respectively. Then on the 29, if you could drive the 90 miles to TUP and park the car... and then fly back to MEM that Sat.... you could overnite at home... and fly the back to TUP on Sun the 29th.... thus qualifying for a Sat nite stay M fare of again, $176.

These M fares total $542 - so the price comes in under budget... with no overnite expenses to goble up the Christmas gift budget. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/thumbsup.gif

I love it!</font>

I was just going to respond to your previous post to let you know that STC parking is FREE, but, alas you found that out. It is a great little airport, almost brand new terminal with lots of granite and wood, you'll like it. The only negative is NW has scaled it back to 4 flights a day to MSP, making connections sometimes difficult.

Only one possibility within the $300 price range that was mentioned was found.

And, that would require that you use the www.ual.com (http://www.ual.com) e-fares that are offered this week on the 15th and 17th. Possibly you could buy a RT tkt DEN-BOS... and then another from BOS to ORD...??? The flights connect up perfectly (1762,525,510,& 999)... and would harvest approximately 5,242 miles. The two fares would come to $355, $384 with tax.

Of course, you would get double miles on the outbound because the double mile promotion is good thruough the 15th. And, the double miles would make a nice little treasure chest for under the tree, don't you think?

Another 'quick and easy' possibility - that is available on the 27th and the 30th - would be LH from DEN-FRA. The fare is $540 something, and would do the job nicely but, might be out of the desired price range.

Getting an itinerary that would reap the desired miles is not the problem... it's just that finding seats out of that fortress between now and the end of the year, IS A problem.

Finally, I even looked at the new fare of $198 from JFK-LON... thinking just maybe one might be able to swing a Premier freebie to NYC... but there are no seats left to LON at that price for the entire rest of the year. (It's a 'match the competition,' but we don't have any seats 'kind of thing', you know.).

Man, you really don't need that many more miles! Your tvlSanta hopes that this effort, however small, might help you find them. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Happy Holidays and Season's Greetings to ya.

P.S. UPDATE: There still might be hope regarding the 11 little morsels if you can make it into the CA market... via Priceline or whatever.

Well your suggestion is well taken. I am on the IAD flight tomorrow morning and attempt to slay this dragon. In order to cut my room costs, I am going to have to chop firewood at a friends house in Virginia, until I go back on the Monday turnaround. I think this was a good trade, but depending on the number of Advil's I will need to take at the end of the day, it may be a wash. Thanks for helping me find this before UA ran out of seats on the outbound segment.I think this gets me elite till 2003, no? A great Xmas tip. Many thanks again.

Tvl4free, Thanks for your quick response. I had spent many hours trying to get SJO to work for me, but failed. You renewed my enthusiasm. However, Mexicana couldn't find any availability just a few hours after your post. Maybe some other deserving FT'er picked up on it.

With new determination, I spent another 5 hours at it, including calling UA, and fianally booked the following for $412:

Dec 28 ORD-IAD UA 536
Dec 28 IAD-MEX UA1021
Dec 28 MEX-SJO UA1007
Jan 16 SJO-SFO UA 888(stops in GUA & LAX)
Jan 16 SFO-ORD UA 150 (redeye)

I hadn't made it clear, but I really wanted to spend some time in Costa Rica (almost 3 weeks should do, huh?). The outbound gives me 3640 miles. I'm still short of 1P by 1200 miles, so I'm working on that now. The return gives me almost 5000 miles for next year.

I tried, but couldn't get the ORD-(SFO)-LAX-GUA-SJO routing on the outbound due to NO availability in V or W class on the LAX-GUA leg. The 5000 miles would have been perfect for me. But I'm very happy!

Tvl4free - Thanks for your help, I sort of parlayed it into something that works even better for me and I'll offer a New Year's toast to you and all the others that have helped me on this board.

Thanks Mahjongguy for your Frequent Flyer Assist software. At times I had 10 browser windows open with variou UA itineraries. You saved me a lot of time.

Happy Holidays All!

Late challenge, from ORD, on UA.

I need 1200 miles before 12/18. Those 1200 miles will get me to Premier Executive. I have every day open, don't care about inconvience, I've just got to make 1P.

Just a short note to let everyone know how this all worked
out. tvl4free worked out an incredible itinerary that got all
all those miles for very little hassle and cash.

Unfortunately, I was unable to avail myself of the opportunity,
due to personal constraints (a burst pipe and a flooded house).

It is still killing me, because I'll miss getting status, and will
have to start all over again.

TvlSanta has been very busy over the last couple of weeks, as
anyone can see by reading these posts. He has got to be one of
the most far-out people I've ever had the occasion to meet (sort of).
I'm off after Christmas on another of his great itineraries, and
can't wait to do it again.

The only problem is that if everyone finds out how helpful and
effective tvl4free is, he'll have no time of his own at all.

Thanks so much tvlSanta, for all your effort and enthusiasm. You've
got a friend for life here in the Maritimes.

Isn't that just like tvl4free?

tvl4free: out of the SF Bay Area, is there still time left in the year for 3 M fare trips? how do you find 'em? :-)

Well, it's been a busy evening for Santa! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

But, reindeer and crew just pulled into IHOP for an early morning bfst4free (the entire crew always seems to get comped on the 25th) and so the elves decided to crank up the laptop for just a moment.

Your tvlSanta noticed that neither a budget nor dates that you were available to travel were mentioned - so we'll just take a stab at the single reasonable option that was found. Can we assume that you are considering the NW Platinum challenge...???

Unfortunately, out of the Bay area, NW basically flies the longer hauls. Infact, using a seat back pocket route map, revealed no short segment trips at all with M fares that were reasonably 'last minute priced.'

Therefore, in order to accomplish Platinum by the 31st, one might consider positioning ones self in MSP because there are several short segment options out of NW's fortress hub. To position last minute would normally be expensive. However, Rudolf, who is an internet surfing geek, did discover a 'Home for the Holidays' deal on the NW site out of SJC to MSP on the 28th and returning on the 30th for $242 RT including tax (not an M fare, but it does earn miles according to the promo info).

If you were to arrive in MSP on the 28th, you could do a quick MSP-STC turn. Doing two more M fare turns on the 29th would give you the 3 RT's that you need. These M fare turns price out at $99+ OW or $738 total including tax.. Total to acheive your goal would cost $994.50.

To justify this expense, perhaps one could take advantage or the after Chistmas sales which The Mall of America will undoubtedly have running full blast at this time.

Platinum for a thousand bucks... not the best of deals, but not too bad either - considering the benefits.

Happy Holidays to you! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Well, we're off to Hawaii - just one more state to go! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Hello,

I'm not sure how many of you have heard of this before, but I think UA is extending its 2001 miles qualifying period to JAN 31'02.

So right now (I'm premierplus), I'm 300 Mi short of 25K (sucks coz they said they couldn't comp me up), and I was thinking of perhaps doing one MR of 25K by end of Jan to get to PremEx?? What do you guys think about it?

Do you think I'll be able to use the 25K for both 2001 and 2002 qualifying miles???

Thanks guys for this great tread!

Happy Holidays!!!

Help!
I miscalculated and flew all the way to FRA for a mileage run didn't get the miles I needed due to an itinerary change forced by AA.

I am currently Exec Platinum (71,857 miles) with one more international and one more domestic run booked for business between now and 12/31: DEN DFW FRA DFW DEN; and DEN ORD DEN; AA also owes me a posting from MCO DFW DEN from last night. I need about 19K miles.

I am based in Denver.

I can do this run between 11/16 through 11/19; or Dec 9 through 11, or Dec 16 through the 23rd or multiple shorter runs if necessary using those dates. They are the only dates I have left.

As for budget, I can handle up to about $1200 with taxes. My favorite travel is to Asia, but can handle pretty much anywhere. The passport has enough pages to do whatever. I'd like to be able to do some Christmas shopping someplace fun if I can swing it.

Thanks very much in advance for any assist. I am new at this.

Ooops. Now if this was 'forced' by AA you should be able to request miles for the originally scheduled itinerary. No need for more runs (and more chance of mistakes;))

If the MR was changed by AA, maybe you can get those miles by contacting them and requesting original routing?

Wow -- 19k EQMs on a budget of $1200 is going to be *really* tough with specific dates in mind at this point in the year. Especially since you're already running up against your first set of dates. Even a DEN-ORD-LHR-DEL roundtrip would only get you 18k EQMs... And its hard to imagine getting that for $1200, though I'm sure you could come in under $2k.

Does AA offer anyhting that could help you get part way there, like applying for a credit card for an EQM bonus? I know that CO offers 3k EQMs to new cardmembers (helping my wife get CO Gold this year)...

peace,
~Ben~

PS> What the hell? People are always b*tching about people starting new threads instead of doing a search / adding to an existing one. Now, this might not have been the best choice since it's about a prior calendar year, but the spirit of not unecessarily cluttering the forum is right. Lay off 'em!

I live in Colorado Springs and need 7500 miles to get to the UA Premier Exec level I want to be at by Dec 31. I had a business trip canceled that would have put me over.

I can travel between Dec 14-21 or Dec 28-30 or could do a quick back and forth Dec 1-2.

It would be great if it could be a neat location where I could take a few days with my spouse as a surprise Christmas present, ie. we could spend an overnight or two in a hotel. We are on a budget, though, so don't want to go anywhere that the hotels are expensive, like NYC. I see London for less than $400 coming up on the weekend web fares, but would hope for less than $300. My main goal is those free stops at the Red Carpet Club on my int'l flights, which I don't get with my basic Premier. I think I can buy in to the Red Carpets for around $300, so that's the price tag in my mind for getting to this level. Please correct me if I'm missing something. This is a little new to me.

Thanks for your help!

Dear Santa, Need MR for 1KUA-Desperately seeking 1K ....
my company is so cheap and will not even fly us on BC to Europe or Asia and have upcoming brutal biz travel Jan-May 08.
LAX,
current eqm: 73
premier exec current status
available travel:
dec. 7th -10th
dec. 14th-17th
dec. 21st-24th
dec. 26th-31st
Budget: Flexible
locations: travelled to all continents except Africa and Australia, very open to any location. South America is good, have a friend in panama need to visit and old friend in Bangalore, India. good Friend in Paris, Rome, Frankfurt, NYC.

Never done MR before, just heard some great stories about a colleagues' husband doing this and went to this forum. Is it possible?

Desperately seeking 1K ....
current eqm: 73
premier exec current status
available travel:
dec. 7th -10th
dec. 14th-17th
dec. 21st-24th
dec. 26th-31st
Budget: Flexible

Is it possible?
With as much time as you have available, it's certainly possible... especially with no budget limitations. And a willingness to travel anywhere. The key tradeoff is probably going to be price vs. time/comfort.

If money is no object, jan_az's proposal of two SIN runs is probably easiest, but it looks like fares this month to SIN are going to cost you. If you've got plenty of time and are willing to fly coach, two r/t's to FRA (Frankfurt), as mentioned in this thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=763032) would net you about 24K, probably for somewhere around $1,000 at this point, and then a domestic trip would wrap things up.

Definitely doable -- you can start with one of these ideas and then use the reams of helpful information in thie forum to try to improve. Remember, UA will let you cancel and refund within 24 hours of booking, so if you see a good itinerary and a good fare -- book it!

Good luck!
