Living in a great restaurant city, that's a tough question, but to me, it doesn’t have to be about the most expensive meal, the best views, the celebrity chefs, but simply, great food. I think I would vote for Betelnut on Union Street in San Francisco ... come to think of it, maybe a hawker center in Singapore, then there is all the great food in New Orleans ...

A couple of days ago I saw on the food channel the chef from Le Bernadin and other chefs testing at French Laundry in Yountville, Napa Valley. The gave high scores.
Zagat review:
"Gaining a table has become a badge of courage" at Yountville's New American-French "epicurean cathedral" - but "everything you've heard is true": "Thomas Keller should have his hands bronzed" for the "culinary pyrotechnics" that produce his "ethereal", "humorous" tasting menus (both meat and veggie) in a "sublime setting"; even with "seamless service", you must "plan on three hours", and expect "obscene prices", but it's an "experience" that every foodie "should indulge in" "before he dies."

the little outdoor restaurant at the Musee Gaugin in Papeari, Tahiti. It's just a little unpretentious place with picnic tables, right on the water's edge. The ground beneath you is.. ground (ie. dirt), the trees and hibiscus plants are all around you, with a nice view of the distant motu and Tahiti iti peninsula.
My last meal there was a plate of Mahi mahi stuffed with crevettes and coquilles St. Jacques, with a vanilla sauce. PLUS a big plate of pommes frites and a bottle of Hinano and some Vaimato water.
In-N-Out for me too! Closest one for me is a flight to LAX and the short ride to Sepulveda.

Schultz's would have been a very high cholce on this list if I was answering on a Saturday, I can't believe they finally closed the place (though whatever is in there is open,it's not a replacement). It's really really sad to think I will never have a doughnut like that again in my life.
If anybody has been there, they know what I'm speaking of, those who haven't can continue thinking I'm nuts.
The WSJ - much to my surprise, yes it was. It was one of those comments you make and are totally shocked somebody picks up and actually thinks it's worthy of quoting. It's a bit sad they can write a paper now just by taking snippets from here and there online, not wearing out their shoes at all.

In the galley of my favorite liveaboard, anchored at one of my favorite divesites....
My favorite eating memory is having my first (and very wonderful) Cesar Salad at the Turf Club at Caliente in the early 60s. The story they told then, was that this salad was invented there at the Turf Club especially for Cesar Romero and named after him. I know there are many conflicting stories, but the fact remains that that was the absolute best Cesar Salad I have ever had.
All Caesar Salad's I have had since The Turf Club time have fallen far short of the original. OBTW, did you know that true Caesar Salads (made with raw egg) have been illegal in California since the early 90s?
We had another wonderful eating surprise just a couple of weeks ago, amazingly enough, at the lunch buffet at the LAX Westin. Way down at the end of the buffet (so obscure that we almost missed it) was a container of the most fabulous mushroom soup I have ever had. Although we were certain that it was primarily butter and cream we both joyfully indulged ourselves in two full bowls and would have gone for three if we weren't too full already. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif I don't know if it was a fluke, but I am certain I will stop by there again someday, just to see if it is still as good.

California decriminalized Caesar salads - and raw eggs - in 1998. Still some restaurants offer pastuerized eggs in their salads to be safe.

If we happen to be out and about on a Saturday or Sunday morning we will sometimes stop for breakfast, and I like my eggs over easy.
Every time they come, this morning included, I think back a few years when they wouldn't let anybody cook them that way and how incredibly stupid it all was.
