Discounter behemoth Wal-Mart now offers good deals on rental cars. A tie-in with Thrifty provides nationwide standard prices of $29.95 a day for compact cars and $39.95 a day for intermediates, both with unlimited mileage. You pick up and return the cars at Thrifty's usual locations -- on airport and off -- not at Wal-Marts. Although the Wal-Mart rates are low, if Thrifty has a lower rate at the time of your rental, you'll get that lower rate. As is usual with car rentals, you're on the hook for a bunch of extras, including sales tax, other car-rental fees and taxes, airport fees and such.

Thank you for your post!! I have a trip planned to ANC on the 18th. The ONLY car company with available cars was Thrifty. I booked a compact on their web site for 59.98, after reading your post, I called the number and was able to book the intermediate for the 39.95 rate. Could have booked the compact for 1/2 price, but decided to upgrade to the intermediate and "pay" $10.00 more, but still savinge $20.00 plus taxes and fees on the $20.00. The only reason I looked in this forum was because I had to book their car. It paid off big time. Thanks again for the info!!

I was pleasantly surprised to see that I received 250 WP miles for the rental also. Beats the snot out of the usual 50 miles.

The Wal-Mart rate is still active, just booked rental car for 2 days in PHX.

I have been lucky when asking Thrifty for the "Continental Airlines OnePass Rate."
At most locations, this gets you a fullsize for $34 a day weekdays.
