I just did a search on "Upgrade on United" and found that we have 58 threads that were returned!!
Here is my modest attempt at putting together a single thread that will prevent us from revisting basic questions over and over again. Please feel free to add, or suggest improvements. . .
However, I looked at those topics and did a search of my own and could not find the answer to my question.
I am traveling on US metal with a UA ticket. I am US silver. Can I get a comp upgrade on this flight based on my US status?
Thank you.

Yes. You must credit miles to your DM account and you can only use your free upgrade at the airport on the day on the flight

Agreed on the first part that you must credit your miles to your DM account but disagree with the "day of" for the upgrade.
As long as I've asked for my PNR (UA tickets have a separate PNR for US metal segments) they have always been able to put me in the upgrade queue and I've cleared at the 24-hour window.
As it should be... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif But it takes a call to DM for them to add you to the upgrade list.
Are other people having problems with this and if so, WHY? Strange....

You may be right about the second part. When called in advance I was told it could only be down at the airport. In my case there were no seats to clear until the gate cleared them and I did not ask to be put in the queue. I was told they would have to do it at the gate.

Good helpful thread.
To answer a lot of basic questions, it would be helpful if we could point to threads answering:
I bought a United ticket, but it's on USAirways, or vice versa.
Where do I check in?
Can I check-in online? Through which website?
Can I use the Kiosks?
Who do I call to make changes? What about seat assignments?
What if the first leg is United, then others are on USAirways?
(Please feel free to add others)
I've been a US and United elite for the past year and I'm still confused by some of these.

Ok, so I am finally flying US again. I want to get my upgrade due to my US status but want the miles to go to UA.
I am thinking that it is best to wait to do it at the gate. It's the Shuttle DCA-BOS on a weekend. Plenty of availability.
Last year I was flying BOS-DCA-(IAD)-LHR-IAD on UA ticket. So I was only eligible for a gate upgrade. No problem and I even got miles in both accounts for this leg.
I think the Shuttle agents are used to entering both accounts due to the old promos where we could miles on both accounts.
p.s. All the links are dead.

I am doing this tomorrow, and having called the CP desk, they said that I could upgrade at the US counter on the day of the flight. I'm not sure if that goes for silver as well.

Yes, this is the rule for all elites. Of course these 'day of' upgrades would go based on elite order. I dont know whether we have figured out whether they go through all people with actual US tickets first before doing UA tickets, I doubt it though (eg CP/GP/SP on US tix then CP/GP/SP on UA tix).

One the day of, it's as if you were on the list for a regular upgrade. UA issued tickets carry no more juice than US issued tickets--it's status teir with the tie broken by time of check-in.

OK, I have tried to find it, but where does it explain that a US1 - US3 traveling on UA stock on US metal may only upgrade on day of departure. There are three upgrade links on usairways.com:
1) E-upgrades for US members on US operated flights.
2) Upgrades for US members on UA operated flights.
3) Upgrades for UA members on US operated flights.
It seems to me that since the flight is operated by US, the window should be the normal US1, US2 or US3 window and controlled by #1. It also makes sense since US gets the revenue when they operate the flight even if it is UA stock. Is it possible that US is simply confused by #2 and #3 as they relate to the codeshare??
Thanks,

Scenario #1 is handled exactly the same way as if you purchased a US ticket. Just make sure to call US to request the upgrades/waitlist and it will clear at the normal windows.

I retract my own statement. It seems that I've been given the special treatment on upgrading my past UA ticket/US metal flights, or so says Res. I tried to get on the waitlist for my latest US flight (UA ticket) and I got to listen to a 5 minute word-by-word, no-breather-inbetween explanation on how it is. But then she (the Res Sup) even said there was no defined policy on it, it was just the way it stands. I've also looked and I can't find any specific policy on this scenario on the US website.
Burns me up... There's no reason that US members flying US metal on a DM# shouldn't be able to waitlist for upgrades.... sigh.....

Yes. You must have received special treatment because res agents have always been very quick to tell me that when you are on a UA ticket on US metal, you can only request the upgrade at the airport on the day of departure.
On UA tickets on US metal, US only receives a fraction of the revenue so I guess they want to reward those who gave them 100% of the revenue first.

Here's a scenario I could not seem to find in any of the searches I did. (Search feature appears to be back up, by the way.)
I'm taking an Alaskan cruise in August, which departs from YVR and returns from ANC. I'm looking at booking a UA ticket to fly LAX-YVR, and ANC-LAX. The LAX-YVR portion would be on Air Canada metal. The flight back from Anchorage would be on UA metal. Can I earn US miles for the AC leg, and would my *A status be recognized on AC if it's a UA ticket?

OK. I looked but couldn't find this one.
I'm Silver on HP, non-elite on US and UA.
I have an upcoming trip on UA metal with US flight numbers to which I've successfully attached my Flightfund account number.
I'm not hoping for a real upgrade, just to be confirmed in E+ without paying extra for the privilege.
Will this go through or do I need to do something else?
I've already tried to fax over a request for status match (which would solve the issue once and for all) but I've never been able to get a working fax number (I've now tried three numbers, including one that I got from a DM call center staffer).

I understand that. But, technically, this is a US flight that happens to be on UA metal, so shouldn't US' policies apply? At least as far as mileage accrual goes, if not any other part of the process. It's funny, but the FF Elite desk person I spoke to yesterday didn't know the answer to this either and couldn't look up my US reservation, so he transferred me over to a DM Elite desk person who looked up my reservation, confirmed that my FF # was loaded in and said I should be set, so I'm thinking that it might just work. We'll see and I'll save my stubs to at least make sure I get my miles (if not in FF, then in DM).
Of course, if the DM folks could just address my status match, then the issue would be moot. ;)

Malthus,
You have a pretty strong case to get the miles but whether or not that will yield E+ seating is to be seen.
What I would suggest you do is call USAirways reservations, emphasize that you are HP silver and see if they will assign you E+ seating on UA. US CAN assign/request seats on UA and you would have a better chance with US reservations than UA res or at the airport.

I am waiting for this too. I have trips starting on HP early in the year, and then a split of US and UA trips for the rest of the year just squeaking by to silver. I am thinking the safe thing to do is to shift to accumulating my miles on US. Also the elite upgrades seem more generous.
With the HP merger, what are the new tradeoffs between accumulating miles and status on United vs. US Airways?

I am planning a trip from PHL to ANC this summer. Now, choices re HP for the most part, or US from PHL>SFO and then a leg on UA from SFO to ANC. I just booked the flights (for 2) and upgraded with miles for the US legs (return is VAN>SEA on ALaska and then SEA>PHL on US). Can I upgrade as a US3 to something better on UA? I don't think it's a code-share flight. I actually have a paper ticket since there is no electronic ticketing agreement with Alaskan Airlines.
Thanks, Jane in PHL

incorrect. US does not have any "flights" of their own on UA metal. UA metal flights are UA flights, and HP has no stance with UA. Just because US has a flight #, doesn't mean HP members can get the same benefits.
Now, on a seperate issue. I heard that UA MP members will be able to start accruing on january 1. is this true?

Hope you mean a CR-1 since a SWU would be wasted on the flight to Hawaii. You can put your DM number on the record, and then sponsor yourself out of your own MP account (assuming that's where the certs are). You could also use your MP account on the itinerary, request the upgrade and then switch to the DM number at the airport. Not sure of any impact on the return if that is also upgraded from the MP account and the # is no longer on the record (make sure you at least have the # with you).

Incorrect - the HP Flightfund is no longer - it was merged with Dividend Miles in May of last year. You certainly can use your old HP Flightfund number but now it is US Dividend Miles. If you have two accounts - call Dividend Miles and have them consolidated. UA treats the old HP numbers like they're Dividend Miles numbers - there is no difference now.

I've been a US and United elite for the past year and I'm still confused by some of these.
Answers:
First, definitions -
Issuing Carrier - the airline that sold you the ticket or the airline your travel agent decided to use to issue the ticket against. UA's tickets begin with 016 and US 037 or 401 (in increasingly rarer circumstances).
Operating Carrier - The carrier that is actually operating the aircraft or the airline the regional carrier is contracted to operate an express flight for.
Where do I checkin?
You always checkin at the operating carrier.
Can I checkin online? Which website?
You can checkin online at the operating carrier's website. You will, however, need to find the correct confirmation number. If you're flying on the issuing carrier, then the confirmation number you have is what you use. If you are not flying on the issuing carrier - you must call the operating carrier to get their confirmation number.
Can I use the Kiosks?
Yes you can - checkin at the operating carrier's Kiosk. If the issuing carrier is different than the operating carrier, you'll need the operating carrier's confirmation number or use some other method of entering in the information in the kiosk (name search, as an example).
Who do I call to make changes?
The issuing carrier unless all remaining travel is on only one airline - then you could call either one.
What about seat assignments?
Though they are capable of assigning seats on eachother's flights - it is best to call the operating carrier for seat assignments.
Hope this helps...

As long as you realize that was supposed to be paid for and you don't deserve it ... consider yourself lucky. Folks can get E+ without paying if E- is full and the overflow gets reseated, that could be the situation you fell into here. Just remember that it isn't owed to you the next time you're on a UA flight, as you might not get so lucky - the GA is only do their job.

UA is increasingly laying off of the anti-US line they've been pushing since the merger... My guess is that this is some sort of unwritten strategy to win passengers from US. I have no idea, but I'm treated very well when I fly United. I always use all of the Star Gold facilities, have upgraded (for free) numerous times, etc.
"Deserve" is a rough word to use...particularly considering what, we, the customers have been through in this disastrous merger. What we really deserve is United apologizing to us for making US Airways a member of Star Alliance or for tolerating the atrocities that US has committed to go on under the blanket of being "A Star Alliance Member" without so much as uttering a word.
As long as I'm a member of the Preferred program and, in turn, a Star Gold member, let me be the one who decides what I deserve and what I don't deserve. And I'll reserve my right to ask. Thank you very much.

Where exactly would UA come into this?
From a UA flyer's perspective, sure kick US out of *A, fine - but you're US and think it's UA's fault ... huh? I would think you've only benefited from the *A membership and UA partnership.

Wow- I must admit I'm totally confused....
The true spirit of the airline alliance is totally lost with some people, apparently. The US vs. Them mentality should not be present. We all benefit from cooperation between the carriers. That level of cooperation used to be a lot greater between US and UA. Look at United and Lufthansa...
Two different companies...yes...one common goal: serving customers.
If you read the Star Alliance web site, it's amazing the difference between what's going on between US/UA and what goes on between the other Star carriers. There's such disparity. It's like everyone wants to have their cake and eat it too.
So, let's have it the US vs. Them way:
No upgrades for anyone but the flying carrier...
No nothing...just use the first class check in line...oh wait...maybe not that
Maybe get a Star Gold bag tag?
Earn miles...but forget about that Elite bonus or your segments
Look, I fly Continental nearly 85% of the time...and I benefit a lot from the NW/CO alliance that really helps a lot when traveling into and out of CO's areas...not to mention the REAL codeshares I can book on dozens of carriers in SkyTeam...yeah, the Alliance is weaker than Star, but they've got what I need.
I'm not a US-proponent...far from it...they're a disgusting piece of an airline. And I like UA a lot and miss the cooperation that US/UA used to have or seemed to have. I'm trapped in a Dividend Miles program I can't seem to get out of...if UA flew anywhere I needed to go other than Chicago, I'd be all over it, but the route structure is so lopsided that, for me, CO just works most of the time...I'm in Houston...I ride US to Harrisburg, PA and that's it...period! And when I can catch a ride on UA where I'm going...all the merrier...I'd like to have at least a chance to have another Star Alliance member, at the bare minimum, show me a little courtesy for being a major customer of one of the partner carriers.

What else is new. Everything works fine until I click purchase. I am using my US DM#, and it wants ONLY a MP#. I don't want to use my MP#. Anyone else had this problem lately?

When I book on UA, there is a dropdown choice of *A carriers. Is that gone?

When I book on UA, there is a dropdown choice of *A carriers. Is that gone? No, it is still there. I choose US Airways, but at the end of the transaction, it still wants my MP#, even though I entered US Airways, and my DM#.
edit: I just went ahead w/ the res. And called UA and spoke to a "Alan Smith" with a rough accent. He was kind enough to enter my US DM# into the itin.

He he...Reminds me of "Alan Smithee," which is the pseudonym which used to be used when a director wanted to take his name off a film.....until enough people caught on! I guess the flying public has yet to catch on!

WARNING!
The links regarding United are no longer valid and the page under "Member Benefits - Upgrade" has disappeared from the US website.
In talking with United, they say Star Alliance Gold including US costs $325 not $200.
Anyone know anything about the disappearance and the cost now?
I bought U/G's in the spring and believe they were still $200 and still have the snapshot page off of the US website at the time.

Call me crazy, but I do not understand your question...WHAT is $325 but used to be $200? Are you talking about something US or UA?

US DM Gold and up used to be able to buy a book of 4 500 UA Upgrade Coupons to be used on day of departure for $200 and the US website used to have a link under Upgrades entitled "Dividend Miles members upgrading on United" that set this out but has now vanished.
United upgrades are $325 for a book of 4X500 and this now seems to apply to US Gold and up....
