Next month, I'm taking a weekend trip to LA to visit some family. I'm routed BWI-PIT-LAX-PHL-BWI. It's a UA ticket on US metal. 2 questions: 1) If I try to standby for an earlier flight, will I be charged the $25 standby fee that US has? 2) On the return, can I standby for a flight into DCA rather than BWI?
1) You will not be charged the fee. If a US agent tries to collect it, politely remind him/her that UA rules say no standby fee.
2) If it was ticketed under US, this would be no problem (after the $25 fee of course). I often ticket to LGA and fly into ISP if it is more convienent for me. However, your ticket must follow the UA rules. I know JFK/LGA is okay on UA, but WAS might be the IAD/DCA option only. Check the fare rules.

You can't standby to DCA from BWI. In my experience, DCA-IAD only.
It would sure be nice if one could though.

I've done it in the past. That's why I ask. Last time I tried however, the gate agent said that they didn't offer that fare for the BDL-DCA market, so I couldn't. I asked everyone I came in contact with and they all said that...until I ran into someone who did it for me in PHL. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Anyone else have this problem?
