So United is matching the AA/DL deal -- fly two RT's between (JFK, EWR, or BOS) and California on non-stop flights and get a free ticket anywhere. Not a bad deal given the $163 RT fares on some of those routes.

Any reason why one couldn't book this, use US status to book an E+ seat, check-in at the preferred line, and then switch to a MP number at the gate in order to get credit for the promotion?

UA allows two numbers to be in the system. Tell them you wish to earn status on UA while receiving benifits from current status in DM. They will enter both in the system for you. If they don't you can ask them to talk to a supervisor to find out how to do it, just tell them they have done it for you before (they get confused sometimes).

Your idea works too BTW, if you give them US #, you can change it at the gate... but then status only shows for the outbound.
