Hello...

Tomorrow (10/2) I was scheduled to head home on US 140, DEN-PHL...however, this afternoon I learned via my mom that the flight had been canceled due to a mechanical issue and that I had been rerouted on US 130 DEN-PIT and US 1288 PIT-PHL as a consequence...is it common for a flight to be canceled that far in advance for a mechanical issue, or was it canceled for something else with a mechanical as a "cover story"???

Thanks,

I had a GRR-PIT flight cancelled one day in advance last year on US Express. Not common, but it obiously happens. Maybe they couldn't find a replacement plane?

On a side note, I complained to US because they really messed up my schedule. Told them that they should pay me the change fee because they messed up my day (had to fly out the next day). I never complain to the DM service center about anything and I am CP. Within a week or two I had a $100 travel voucher.

This may be a good idea for you. You can log the complaint online.

This is a result of parking too many planes in the desert and stretching the equipment resources too thin.

...and it requires one more e-upgrade. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

The connection ordinarily wouldnt bother me too much (being an aviation buff, my motto on trips is "The more segments, the merrier")except that my time back home is kinda short...only Thursday afternoon to Sunday morning...and the extra 2 and a half hours or so that I lost with the stop is slightly irritating, but Ill live...

On Thursday morning when I came to DEN, there was an A319 at the gate for US 140, but the screens showed it as canceled...does anyone know what was wrong with the plane???

Thanks,

Well in checking my statement it appears US did not deduct any e-upgrades for US130 or US 1288 DEN-PIT-PHL even though I was in F...didnt ask for it but its nice of them...

Checking it a little more closely again they gave me a 100% mileage bonus for DEN-PIT-PHL instead of the 50% that is the standards for SP...how nice of them...

I think all in all it worked out VERY well for you:

* Advance notice of cancellation allowing you to plan.
* Free upgrades.
* Extra miles for the connection and the bonus.

While it may indeed be a result of stretchng their equipment too thin http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif, it's great when the airlines are proactive about these sorts of things. I'd give US a thumbs-up for this one.

Twice this weekend I was inconvenienced by flights cancelled due to "mechanical problems" (PHL-YYZ and YYZ-PIT). For the first, I had wanted to fly standby, and less than 24 hrs before flight time, seats were still available. However, upon arrival at BWI at 5am, they informed me of the bad news. To top it off, they refused to give me a security pass to wait out the morning in the club, insisting on making me wait outside security till four hours before my original flight to check in. (I had to be upgraded, therefore kiosk check-in was not an option--or was it?)
