View Full Version : AA magazines on US metal?

Yesterday as I was flying home from CLT/MCI, I started to thumb through the "SkyMall" catalogue. As I was flipping through, I noticed quite a bit of airline merchandise being offered, such as plastic models, etc. The only difference, it was for American Airlines. It even said "American Airlines Fall 2003" on the front cover. First I thought another passenger left his magazine, but looked into the seat pocket next to mine and checked a few others as I was leaving the aircraft. They were all American Airlines! Is US using other carriers "Skymalls"? Anybody else notice this on other flights?

This could explain a lot. US management, being mildly confused, mistakenly flies AA and "recycles" the Sky Mall magazine through supply channels when they arrive back at HQ. They then distribute them to their aircraft. Since they fly full fare first class they believe they have a great FC product and well worth the premium they charge.

Is Sky Mall published by AA? Looks like WN's magazine is...

May have been an error on the part of the provisioning crew, in cities where US/AA use the same company. The Skymall magazines are published with virtually the same content, except for possible special AA content, a alrine-specific cover and source code.

What?
No one is going to float a rumor that AA is buying US (or vice versa), thus opening up a slew of mile and upgrade scenarios and dreams for us all?
Okay, I will: Upon informing the FA of the AA materials, her face turn a ghostly shade of pale. She snatched the telltale magazine from his hand, and, with a faraway look in her eye, whispered, "They weren't supposed to be released yet! It's not TIME!"
Have we heard a follow up from MCIflyer? Do we know if he's still alive, or has he been "upgraded" permanently?

Isn't that much more fun than a real explanation?

According to Keith Alexander's column in the Washington Post:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A53685-2003Oct6_2.html

US Airways Mix-Up: A few weeks ago US Airways inadvertently placed copies of American Airlines' SkyMall magazine in its planes. Travelers thumbing through the fall edition of the magazine came across advertisements for items with American's logo emblazoned on them. A US Airways spokesman said the airline got boxes of the magazines by mistake and distributed them in a few cities the airline serves. The airline is now pulling the magazines off the planes.

Sounds like all those Skymalls' were never compted to US! As I flew to PIT a few days later, I noticed they were gone. As for me, I haven't been permanently upgraded to US yet. :-)
