I am Gold Preferred and am planning to travel with and upgrade a friend who isn't Preferred. What happens if both upgrades clear and then I have to cancel or reschedule my flight? Does my friend's upgrade get cancelled? Or can he still fly in style and comfort in first class even if I'm on a different flight? Thanks.
(I am not traveling from PHL to Paris; this time it's a domestic flight; the message header is from a previous post I made.)

You and your friend need to be on the same itenerary if you want to use a Transatlantic or Systemwide upgrade. If he tries to show your coupons without you present, he'll likely be booted to a middle seat in the back. Not a fun place to be for 7+ hours.
The 'bug' with the system that may or may not have been fixed by now is that you could conceivably put you both on the waitlist if you have a confirmed reservation on the flight. He'll then get flagged as a Gold Preferred member - even if you cancel your segment (unless they fixed this). If seats clear up to 24 hours before departure, then he'd be bumped up to Envoy. But, again - he'll be S.O.L. when he tries to use certs that aren't in his name if you aren't travelling with him. So, I don't advise this approach.
But, if you want to upgrade your friend with 30000 points(each way), provided he's NOT on a V fare, then you can do that without having to be a companion. The point upgrades can be given to anyone.
