I am thinking of bringing my wife and son to New England on reward ticket(s).Thought is to pay for my wife and reward mile my son, or perhaps reward ticket both of them. If they're travelling with me on a slow day (Sat) will they be able to upgrade as my companion(s)? Obviously my ticket would be purchased.

I'm hoping my CP status will allow them a little flexibility.

Thoughts, experiences?

Unfortunately, you can't upgrade award tickets, unless (through reading here) you buy a "Premium Award ticket" which is booked in Y class and double the miles. I don't like this policy as I have been on flights on an award ticket with plenty of seats upfront and I can't upgrade on it.

I've run into that for this coming weekend, Skip. Wanted to take advantage of the monthly e-statement reduced mile award offers. Am taking the Mrs. down to Charleston this weekend.

Since you can't upgrade award tickets I had to plunk down 36k miles for a first class award. My ticket is paid for. She's got FC for all four segments. Me, however.....I'm on the waiting list for upgrade from DCA-CLT and from CLT-CHS. My upgrades on the return are confirmed. I guess I'll have my wife come back and visit me with a few Jim Beams and cashews in her hand!

Not a chance on getting them upgraded with your CP status at the gate or at check-in. However, if you are in the front and it's empty, ask the FA if they could kindly bring your wife and child up to the front to sit with you. Don't tell them they are on an award (don't know if they can tell who in the back is on an award and who is not), but we were able to do this on a trip a couple of months ago. Had a friend of mine who was sitting up front with his girlfriend...we were all on award tix, but his was in first and my girlfriend and I were in the back. There were only 4 people in first on a 321. He simply asked the FA if his two friends could come up front...and the FA came back and invited us. This is probably your only chance as I can see it.
