Based on other posts, I think wannaflymore is asking about coach...
Ask for exit rows when you check-in on the day of departure. Otherwise, I'd go for an aisle seat any day of the week (particularly on the longer flights to/from SEA).
The Washiongton Post had an article on this on April 17. You can probably still find it on their website. They say that rows 10-17 have two inches more legroom. Of course, the Post is wrong on a lot of things, but it's probably worth trying.

Exit aisles are always what I shoot for. I called the CP desk today and changed 6 of my 8 standing PIT-SFO-PIT flight reservations to an exit aisle from various aisle, windows, and even centers all over the plane.
I'm pretty sure you can't book these via travel agents, web sites, etc., but the CP desk always comes through for me.

Sometimes you can't when booking online, however I always call the SP desk after making a res. online to have my seat moved. The bulkhead and emergency exit rows are alwys held for Preferred flyers. Those seats do not become available until your DM number is entered so there is no need to worry about non-preferreds taking the seats. That is, unless it is forced by a supervisor.....

As far as coach, what about row 4, aisle or window? Extra bulkhead room and you don't have to break your neck trying to see the LCD monitor for the 'entertainment'.
