View Full Version : Baseball in the 'burgh?

First, let me acknowledge that this topic probably belongs in the 'Community' section (and may end up there). However, I am starting it here because I think the most interest would be with US flyers.

Is there interest in an informal get together for a game at PNC Park? I was there last summer for a game and was very impressed with the stadium (and the enthusiasm of the team and fans). Checking the schedule, I thought Saturday, 6/22 (Texas Rangers) might be a good game to attend. Being a TX team, it might also attract AA and CO flyers.

For hotels, it would be easy logistically:
Marriott: the new Renaissance (has become one of my favorite hotels) is just across the bridge from the stadium.
Hilton: the Hilton is about a 10 minute walk from the ball field
Starwood: the Doubletree is also about a 10 minute walk, but it's not one of favorite hotels. There is a Sheraton at Station Square (south side) which I 'think' may have boat service to the Pirate games.

Thoughts? Ideas? Opinions?

It's nice we don't have moderators here at the USAirways board. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I am of course up for a game. Even though I live in town, I like to stay downtown on weekends every so often. I usually stay at the Omni William Penn (formerly the Westin). I stayed there last month and got a real nice corner room. The Renaissance the other 'upscale' hotel downtown I would consider.

The Hilton is the 'grand dame' of the downtown hotels, right near Point State Park. It's usually quite a bit more expensive. The Westin Convention Center is also around that area, but a bit further down the road. The Marriott is a bit far IMHO, being across from the arena. Station Square does have boat service to games, I believe, and that's where the Sheraton is -- but that's not in downtown proper. However my wife tells me that's a great area to walk around and look and by that time we should have the new Hard Rock Cafe Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh, cool? doubt it) there.

Priceline has great deals for these hotels on weekends. (My Omni stay was through Priceline). Of course hotel rates aren't usually that bad anyway.

PNC Park is great. I've been there for two games in the cheap seats, but enjoyed it (though I don't really care for the Pirates or baseball overall).

Put me down as a strong maybe whatever you choose; I'm trying to STOP flying around so much so a usermeet so close to home would be great. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Everyone, watch the AFC Championship Game and then come to Pittsburgh and spend money. hehehe

What a nice idea!

It would be great to watch a hometown team other than my own lose a game. (sorry, still bitter about last Sunday's FB game).

What might be good as well is to pick an interleague game. It's always fun to watch two teams that rarely meet.

Heck, I'll be there. The new Renaissance is the premeir place to stay for a game, but the D-tree, Hilton, Omni, and Ramada are all within hoofing distance. The Sheraton Station Square is also nice, plus you are right by Station Square (and you can catch the clipper to the game).

For the hotel miles junkies - Doubletree is in the Hilton family (not Starwood). But for the convenience of walking, the Hilton is worth it.

I would probably wait for that weekend's ESavers and come out, and if there is a PIT ESaver from CLT, CAE, GSO, or GSP (which there usually is) I'm in ... unless a really cheap fare comes along in the meantime (not all that likely since it's hub-to-hub) from CLT.

God bless Airtran and the $78 PHL-PIT fares.

I'm interested, but I have no idea what this summer is going to look like.

Ahh summer, when we can count on the Pirates to do their best to imitate a doormat...

I don't know about the humidity.. it's never bothered me here. Of course, my wife's from Texas, so when I go down there in the summer I know what humidity really is http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Flowers....those are the bright orange and white things that flash, right?

BTW: The Hilton Pittsburgh is, IMO, a DUMP, although it is in a very good location.

It's okay if you are working near the point or Gateway Center. Else, the Mariott is a much nicer hotel in a much better spot. As is the Omni (what was the Westin William Penn).

Any of these places (save for the Sheraton Station Square) all within a 20 minute walk of PNC.
