Can anyone explain this? I flew over in coach on the way over, and used a SWU on the way back. Is that why i got another set of miles? I assume one set of bonus miles is because I am Gold.

The bigger question is where is the double miles bonus credit for the promotion that ends on Dec. 15th. I assume you made this trip in the last couple of months?

Since your Envoy shows as J instead of the upgraded class (O I think), you were booked into a "paid" J fare, so you earned the 50% Class of Service bonus ... which is good! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Those miles count towards elite status and your next set of upgrades.

Looks like you got a windfall; they counted your trip back as being flown in J, which is paid Envoy, hence the 50% bonus mileage. Upgraded Envoy is actually "O" class for which you are not supposed to receive the 50% Envoy bonus miles which also count toward status.

Additional details.
Was a $365 ticket in V class over thankgiving. And I did upgrade using the SWU on the way back. I don't dare call about my threshold mile counter, as i got way to many bonus miles for this trip that I didn't show. So it seems I got a good deal.

This has never happened to me. Your lucky day!

It appears your trip over was classified as paid Y class, even though you say it was a discount V ticket. If your ticket back was originally typed as Y class, this would explain why your upgrade became a J. Y is a full coach fare. Any upgrade to a Y, domestic or intl., becomes J(intl.) or F(domestic), thereby earning you the class of service bonus.

I have never failed to get class of service bonuses every time I'm upgraded... that doesn't happen to the rest of you?

I've had this happen on a couple of occasions when doing something slightly outside the rules--like upgrading e-savers and the like.
I've theorized that if the agent cannot make a G based upgrade work in the computer, but they want to accomodate you, that you get placed in F. Or, at least when it has happened to me that's been what the circumstances would point to.
Of course, I've had it happen like SBN-PIT or CLT-TPA--nothing quite so lucrative as a trans-atlantic hop.
And I would take a pass on calling about the threshold counters for awhile--no point in kicking the proverbial gift horse in the mouth.

It seems that if you upgrade before the seats become airport control (at time of purchase or within the upgrade windows) , they usually put you in 'O' class. Sometimes, if you get the upgrade at the ticket counter or at the gate, you may get 'lucky' and get the 50% class bonus.

That would make sense. I actually got the upgrade 2 minutes before boarding the plane, and i was sorta rushing the woman at the gate (who btw doesn't actually work for USAIR).

If you are upgrading a ticket with a fare basis code of Y or A (possibly B?), you get the elite class of service (preferred miles) bonus. The bonus is, apparently, 50% for J and 100% for F.

I thought that the (full fare) Y->F upgrade thing only was for domestic. I have had several Y transatlantic fares upgraded to Envoy, but into O, not J, class..
Which is right?

Remember that the fare class posted on the "current" online summary will changed once it's processed for monthly statements to whatever fare class you paid.
That said, I got lucky last year flying PIT-SEA when the gate agent put me in F rather than G. May have happened again yesterday (another PIT-SEA flight) though I was upgraded at FLL check-in (have to see when the miles post).
If you can stand the anxiety and uncertainty, last minute upgrades are the way to go!

It shows on the boarding pass right after the flight number -- if it says "F" you got lucky.
Your best chance seems to be when there are unusual circumstances -- weather delays, canceled flights, volunteering to be bumped and stuff like that. Sometimes the system makes it too hard for them to upgrade you in G so they just put you into F. Very occasionally you get an inexperienced gate agent who does it accidentally... but usually they're bending the rules trying to compensate for some problem or other. This is one of those times when being polite, pleasant and patient pays off.

That was my first thought too (wait and see til statement clears for the month), but it looks like the class-of-service bonus has already gone through (5606 not 3737)..

I got the 50% FC bonus for that flight with the upgrade in F inventory.
US 0115 F PIT SEA 2,125 3,188 5,313
Written to US to get the double miles bonus posted. Wonder if that will be 2,125 or 3,188 miles bonus?

It'll be a 2,125 mile bonus. I got upgraded into F on my infamous PIT-ATL flight on 11/28 and received double miles on the actual miles flown (in addition to the 50% First class bonus and 100% GP bonous).
