The following cities will lose mainline service as of 7 October:
Canton/Akron
Charleston (West Virginia)
Chattanooga http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif
Columbia
Grand Rapids
Greenville/Spartanburg
Huntsville
Knoxville
Roanoke
South Bend

These cities will now be served only by US Airways Express carriers (and whatever other airlines may be offering).

Also, the Metrojet service to Chicago Midway will disappear, and Charlotte loses its two one-airline connections to Europe (while keeping the one where British Airways competes--one wonders where the logic is on that one).

Edited to explain the term mainline and to correct for a no-longer-available smiley.

What exactly is "mailine service"? Are you saying that Roanoke will loose USAir??

That means no more big planes, only commuter planes operated by US's commuter airlines ...

On another note, I honestly don't expect BA's CLT-LGW service to survive ... whether or not that would really mean the end to US's CLT-LGW service I don't know, I would think that would be more likely to survive than the FRA and CDG service even without the competition ...

US Airways mainline refers to flights operated by a "real" US Airways jet with First Class cabins, etc. These services will now be operated by US Airways Express, several airlines that are regional affiliates to US Airways. Flights depart from US gates, and you get Dividend Miles, so it would be like any other US Airways flight for the most part.

I guess this shouldn't be surprising. US started downgrading mainline markets to express last year, and after all this I'm not surprised they are continuing (furhtermore, it is a good time to downgrade these markets with community backlash). I'd always liked the fact that US provided mainline service on these short hops, and it was good incentive to fly US rather than connect from, say, Delta, to ASA/Delta Connection in ATL. Nonetheless, US Airways Express is still better than ASA!

As for international markets, CLT-LGW was the first and probably the most likely to survive out of three (CDG is probably the worst, evidenced by the fact it was the only one not to get the 330). I don't see how BA can really do well in CLT-LGW. They don't get much of any connecting traffic from points in the US (as anyone who did want to fly BA from the US to London could connect in ATL, etc, rahter than CLT). So there only real passengers were probably local CLT-LGW and any CLT'ers flying onward to other European destinations (or vv).

Just a minor correction here bizjet - Only CLT-LGW received the 330. CLT-FRA was supposed to, but due to construction and space issues (back when BA flew the 777 here - it was quite crowded, and 2 330s and a 777 wouldn't have fit at the old Concourse D) - the 330 destined for the route was put on the PHL-Manchester route.

Doubt CLT-LGW would be discontinued for the simple reason that it took US so long to get slots for the flight (remember, Piedmont won the route back in '87, and US kept it until the deal with BA required US to divest itself of the route - and thus didn't get it back until '99).

Actually, CLT-FRA was scheduled to get the 330 but it wasn't gates and space issues in CLT that stopped the 330 from operating on that route it was a big cargo deal for the PHL-MAN route that stole the 330 from CLT-FRA.

BTW, the 330 that currently runs PHL-SJU daily is scheduled to change to a 767 in November -presumably the craft will be one of those that won't be going CLT-CDG or CLT-FRA anymore. So where is the 330 going?

HAH! Here's what they're using the ex-CLT-LGW A330 for:

Why Chexfan, reread the article again. It says there will be US Air suits accompanying the flight...
