In a press release today, AA has announced extension through 2003 for current elite levels- Gold, Platinum and EXP. Which airline will be next? US?

We can only hope.
With business travel off as much as they predict, I would imagine upgrades would not become any more difficult anyway.

Since I already have enough travel booked to get me back to Gold, I hope they don't, for purely selfish reasons http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

My wife and I discussed this possibility.. for us it would be great, since this year I barely made Silver (though I was expected only to be dropped to Gold). It would be nice to still be able to bump chexfan and geo1004 on USAirways (if they don't bump me first for looking too Arabic) for another year.

What would really be swell is if US were to slightly reduce the mileage requirements to make Chairman's! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

geo, I'm sure chexie boy can verify, but our bet was for a Super Size Value Meal of my choice. I ain't letting you off with the Quarter Pounder w/ Cheese http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
BTW, I'll be happy to bet in advance the Capitals will lose, even after they have to take Pens players to become a 'contender'. I can count on Ted Leonsis (caps owner) and geo1004 to feed me once a year! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

My guess is that this policy will be the norm for the industry, the reason being that the airlines need every passenger they can get; extending status is a cheap way to help in that effort. What needs to be done is to allow flights from now to January to count towards 200-2004 status. That would really help fill the planes. I realize the dilution problem, but from what I see, there are a lot of empty seats going unsold right now.

In my case this will cost then business if they follow. I was going to take 2 milage runs to retain my Gold. I don't have to if they match the deal.
Let's wait and see. New and innovative thinking is not their strong suit.

pitflyer- geo1004 has zero clue what you are talking about when you start blabbing about the Pens and Caps. </offtopic>
On the topic, I hope the airlines DO NOT follow AA and extend or reduce their elite qualification. I am speaking from the same selfish mode as beckles. I mean c'mon, let's get real, you couldn't fly for let's say, a week at most. That's nothing to get our underwear in a tizzy and beg for reduced levels!

Chexfan, you just don't want me bumping you for another year, admit it!
Seriously I also agree that it's completely unfair, but as someone who's already personally benefited from AA extending my Plat for a year (even after not flying AA this year) I can't help be a little selfish.
But since it's been several days and US has done nothing, I wonder if they've already decided against it. Either way, I'm ok with it http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Airlines in direct route overlap with American will have no choice. US may drop the mileage requirement a bit (just got a letter from NW telling me that they are), but I bet US resists. For one thing, many of us work on other programs at the end of the year, once we hit the tier on the primary. Giving status early might have the opposite effect on them.

I, for one, hope that USAirways doesn't following AA's lead and start blanket comping of elite status, in spite of the circumstances. Elite levels should be earned and I have never been in favor of even the "challenges" that they run, since it dilutes the elite program. I have a colleague that earned Gold status five years ago the hard way-flying the required 50K miles-and hasn't flown 50K miles since, but has retained his Gold status by waiting until the second half of the year when they run the challenges and then flying 12,500 miles. That's why I say NO WAY!

I hope they *do* relax the Q miles requirement, at least a bit. My company has just about banned travel to Europe due to the economy + the terrorist attack. I was going to go in November. With a coupla domestics I am ticketed on in December, I will have 43,000 miles toward GP. Spoke to a Gold DM rep today and she said they haven't matched American or NW yet but to call back in two days..... Hmmmmm maybe she knows something.

AA just announced double miles and reduced mileage award. Hope US will follow as this will be incentive to reach for Chairmans!

AA's double miles offer does not count toward Elite status qualification. Hopefully, US's will. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Yes, you are correct they don't count toward status. But these bonus miles give extra incentive to fly more and more, just like the threshold bonuses did long ago.

Delta's plan to give double status miles through 11/15 seems like a good idea. Helps with status for next year, but rewards those who really fly and doesn't dillute the status by extending status to those who wouldn't have earned it again 9/11 or no 9/11.

Actually I thought that CO had actually announced that early yesterday afternoon! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
As I've got a trip this weekend, I hope US will get on the ball and announce double miles or something already! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

US did announce double miles - Oct 4th thru Nov 15th. And a 20% reduction in Qmiles for each level! They have earned my loyalty by doing the right thing in a tough year.
