It seems alot of people think that US will not survive this latest downturn. I have read article after article with headlines like "US Airways teeters on the brink". My question to all of you is this: How can we protect our current Dividend Miles in the event US Airways goes under? Anything that can be done now to protect those miles?

(I have no opinion on this product; personally I'm not worried about losing my miles.. about a million between my wife and I)

I'm not too worried either...
But the best way to protect your miles is to BUY a ticket and fly.

Visit the site again. Privilege Flyer will also protect the balances in your accounts.

The AwardGuard benefit protects any unused miles/points or awards you have in a program covered under this service. Coverage becomes effective when a program goes completely out of business and is not taken over by any other frequent traveler program.

From the website. My bolding.

Did I read somewhere that the coverage doesn't apply to chapter 7 bankruptcies, only chapter 11?
I can't believe someone wouldn't step in a pick up US - even if at fire sale prices. Hard to envision an asset only sale.. I have quite a few miles there and I'm just gonna take the leap of faith..

Just took a look at the FAQ's and other stuff from Privilege Flyer - no information on limiting coverage if it's a Chapter 7 vs. 11. But, it does say that AwardGuard claims cannot be filed until the airline has completely gone out of business. I would expect that the membership packet I'm due to receive (with all the doom 'n gloom of the last few days I broke down and bought one year of AwardGuard) would have the real word on that.
Anyone who has AwardGuard know the answer to this question?
Oh, and all airlines are teetering on the brink. US has a real problem due to the continued closure of DCA - but at least it's better off than Midway who was out of here the day after the horror of 9/11/01.

I couldn't agree more. If there was ever a time when our business was NEEDED, this is it. Plus, there's no stronger message we could collectively send to America's enemies than for our travel habits to return to normal -- showing that we are not afraid.

hey, if I can buy a ticket to fly to SEA to drink beer with chexfan, the least the rest of you guys can do is book a mileage run. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

A mileage run? My mileage run is $11.75 a segment, 8 segments, same-day return. Without tax it is $7.50 a segment. Does US make ANY money? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Island Girl - with a son in Saudi, I am quite worried about the future. But that doesn't mean I'm callous for also wondering if my hundreds of thousands of miles are likely to be there for my retirement travel as planned..

Islandgirl, while we must never forget what happened in NY, VA and PA (and I do know people who are still missing in NY), if we cannot think about other matters, even the day to day "mundane" issues, if we cannot worry about our own personal financial concerns, then the evil individuals who committed these acts have won.
It's a matter of some embarrassment to me that my job has kept me from being able to fly, but I look forward to starting as soon as possible.

Some of us have a *LOT* of miles saved up, and to me this is just like cash. If US does declare bankruptcy, there would still be time to cash in the miles on them or partners. It seems unlikely that they'll just completely close.
If another airline swoops in and buys them, who's to say the points in our DM accounts will be good?
I guess it depends how many points are in your account, but I have enough that I may seriously consider the $119 plan.

So wait... all of these "Dividend Miles" are worth something?
