Today I was notified by US that US Airways Express' daily YHM-PIT service will be discontinued effective July 8, 2001.

This route has existed since 1987/88 when it was introduced by Allegheny Commuter. I'm quite surprised to hear news of this route elimination because the loads have always been pretty good.

This may be due to changes at the airport. For a long time, that was the only commercial flight into Hamilton. But now, it's a major base for Westjet, and I've heard rumors of Air Canada arriving too. Rent may have gone up to the point where it no longer works there.

Air Canada initially had plans to operate a low-cost carrier out of YHM, but that idea has been shelved for a while now. WestJet is further expanding at YHM with new non-stops to YYC and YEG this summer, so that could possibly be a factor.
