Justice Department To OK United-US Airways Deal

WTAE-TV Sources Confirm Announcement Plans
PITTSBURGH, 6:59 p.m. EST February 13, 2001 -- The U.S. Department of Justice is expected to approve a proposed $11 billion merger between US Airways and United Airlines and will make an announcement about the decision by April 2, WTAE-TV's Sheldon Ingram has learned.

Well, a leak from a union official who talked with the chairman of United hardly constitutes a "step closer" for this deal. I'll still be surprised to see the Antitrust Division approve it, but the AA side deal does make it somewhat more likely, as it reduces the very worst parts of the deal, from an antitrust perspective.

The US web site has info on the merger and rules on DM and club use. It cites a date of April 2 as the assumed merger approval.

We have a new pro-business administation (I am in favor of).. and I think that is going to allow this go through.

Just hope AA stays strong.. and Delta and Continental grow also.

I just do not want USAirways to get rid of the Airbuses.. they are awesome!!

UA has a pretty good stock of A319/320's. Since US would give up their own 757's to AA, the A321's on order will probably continue. At least, that's what I've gathered from the discussions and news.
