I just got off the phone with an agent on the Gold Preferred Desk to book an award for same day, roundtrip travel on the Shuttle between LGA and DCA.
She was quick to set up the itinerary, and everything seemed fine until she said that it would require 40,000 miles. I asked why, and her explanation was that without a Saturday night stay, I would require a premium award (although not 50,000 miles, since I did meet the off-peak requirements).
So I asked her why she didn't use a USSZ15 award (good through 6/31/01), for travel on the Shuttle, which doesn't require a Saturday night stay and only costs 15,000 miles. She was kind enough to make that change.
So I guess the moral of the story, and perhaps applicable to travel in general, is to know what you want before hand so that you can make sure you don't get something else.
