I have a fat pile of US Airways 800-mile upgrade certs that are going to expire on Nov. 30 and know I won't be flying US between now and then. Does anyone here know if these things have any value after their expiration date? Some airlines will let you swap certs 2-for-1 for new ones (such as UA). Other airlines don't care at all about the expiration dates (such as AA before they went electronic). What boat does US fall into?

I'm hoping these things won't be worthless as of 12/1. They have my name on them and are not transferable, so selling them isn't an option. I'm also assuming they don't have any value on UA flights because the acquisition technically isn't complete. Any thoughts?

US does not have a swap program like United.

Some agents will let you slide on expired certs and some won't. So I wouldn't just toss them.

BUT - I have on at least one occasion - completely by accident - pulled the wrong envelope full of certs out of my briefcase, and used expired ones at the counter. Sometimes it works - sometimes it doesn't!

Hang on the the expired ones and try to use them. The worst thing the agent can say is "No". Just have some good ones with you in case they do.

Once I asked if I could use a certificate that was 1 week after expiration. Not only did the agent say no, but another agent said she should have torn them in half. How destructive!

A few days later, another agent gladly accepted them "as long as they are just recently expired" as he put it.

USAirways will replace expired coupons, up to 10 per year I think. I had about 6 or eight replaced earlier this year and have a bunch more that will expire 11/31. I'm not sure if this is limited to elite levels. The worst you can do is call the DM desk and ask.
