View Full Version : Upgrades more difficult on transcontinental 767?

I'm flying PIT to LAX this Wednesday, 1 November on US flight 49. I just after midnight today for my upgrade as a Gold Preferred. My PVD-PIT leg on an Airbus was available, but no dice on the PIT-LAX 767 leg. Are upgrade seats less plentiful on the transcontinental? Maybe there are more seats reserved for sale on those planes because US is hoping to sell them over their non-widebodies?? Or, did I just have a little bad luck? I've never NOT been able to confirm an upgrade in advance as US2. Anyways, I was waitlisted...hopefully my chances are good. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I've been waitlisted several times, but only twice have I failed to get upgraded.. folks who actually pay for first have nothing to lose by cancelling or rescheduling at the last minute and my experience is that several per flight must do so.. good luck!

I am facing this situation on my SEA-CLT-FLL flights in 2 weeks. G inventory is down to 0 on both flights and F inventory is 6 on a 757 (24 seats). Hoping not too many CPs are waiting to upgrade as I am going to call at 9pm 4 days before to waitlist.

The flights back are almost wide open and these areon 12 F seat equipment too.

TFNF,

Looks like you picked a bad day to go PIT>LAX. Your flight currently shows only 3/24 F seats available(hope you like bulkhead). The 3 earlier flights have 0F, but the last flight shows 7F at this time.

Typically, US blocks out 4 seats in F until a couple of hours before flight time.

I don't think that the 767 service would make the flight more difficult to upgrade, but I might be wrong. To my knowledge, US Airways has not marketed this service as a premium service at all. Unless you closely monitor the schedules, you wouldn't know a widebody was on this route.

I (respectfully) disagree - even though US has not marketed it as a premium service (and the service is the same as other domestic transcons), I would guess that enough US passengers out there know that the 767s they're using on this route have the envoy seats. For me, it was a selling point on taking flights out to LAX this summer - I could have flown a 767 or either 757s or 320s. It was the 767 in a walk.

But as for getting the upgrade, so long as there are F seats left, I'd say you have a shot. As Bill noted, US will hold a few seats for sale (for those last minute folks) and those seats will be released for upgrade about 1-2 hours prior to departure. So the key is - check in early and get on the waitlist then too.

IIRC, if no G seats are available, the waitlist that the Preferred folks keep gets cleared out right around 24 hours before the flight (may be a bit later). When no G seats were available, we were upgraded at the gate in one case, at airport check-in another - but it was dependent on getting on the airport waitlist for upgrades once there. Point is this: Check in earlier than usual if you want to maximize your chance of getting the upgrade - as check in time breaks any status ties.

Good luck.

Well, my outbound flight from PIT was delayed about four hours. So I had them reroute me to a pretty much empty flight from PHL on a 757. I didn't get an upgrade on my return, though. My luck as a Gold Preferred doesn't seem much better than it was as silver. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif Oh, well. I'm taking a PVD-LAX mileage run on the 1st and 2nd of December so I'll make Gold for next year. I made Gold this year in May from their Gold challenge, and by the end of the year, I will requalify for Gold for real. Hopefully, I'll have better luck.
