View Full Version : December's 7500 mile promo & Office Max.com

Note - this is a long thread & someone may tell me to keep it shorter, but if its too long for you read, then please don't read it...

***

I know that there are other threads on the December promotion that allowed one iDine purchase and an Mileage Plus mall purchase to award the participant with 7500 mileage plus miles. This is relevant to that topic, but I am starting a new thread because this is relevant to those people that used Office Max as their Mileage Plus partner.

I called Mileage Plus on January 27 and they told me to fax in the e-mail receipt and they would resolve this issue. I faxed it in and no response as yet. Mileage Plus had not posted the miles (only been a few days, but I figured that if one faxes something in to a particular person's attention, then one would speed up the process - in general, all my other dealings with Mileage Plus have been relatively quick).

I called the MP Premier line today to get an update. They told me that a letter was sent to me on 1/28 stating that I had to follow up with Office Max. Since I had not received this letter, I asked the person the details of the letter. Basically, it said that Mileage Plus is not at fault here and that they will not be doing anything about it unless Office Max sends them a request to credit miles.

My (silent) question was then why was I asked to fax in my Office Max confirmation e-mail if Mileage Plus was not going to take an active roll with one of their business partners?

I was given a general toll-free number (800-283-7674) and spoke to an Office Max.com CSR reprentative (after 15 minutes on hold - thank god for speakerphone!). The rep said she had no idea what I was talking about and suggested that if what I'm saying is true, then I should probably contact United and have them credit me the miles (which I would love to do, but I need confirmation from Office Max to United telling them to do this!). She suggested that I call the Corporate offices and gave me their number (216-471-6900) and ask the operator to put me in touch with the right department.

After about 8 rings, the operator decided to pick up the phone and I explained my situation to her and she suggested that I call OfficePerks (Office Max's loyalty program - 866-629-7375 - if anyone wants to try) - who was closed. This is all before 5PM EST, so I was surprised that they were closed.

I will try resolving this with Office Max tomorrow and post back here what the results are.

After this is resolved (if it is - Office Max just does not seem like it's a company that I should ever try to do business with again), I will be following up with a letter to their corporate offices, as well as a letter to Mileage Plus.

The reason I think it's ridiculous and that Mileage Plus and Office Max are equally responsible for making sure that these points get processed is because Office Max & the Mileage Plus Mall have an agreement. One (most likely Office Max) or the other is not holding up their end of the agreement and frankly, it's rather annoying that it effects customers. And not just the customer of one retailer, but of both. In the past, when purchasing things like toner or even equipment such as printers, I've done my research online and have ended up purchasing at the store. Over the past 2 years or so, my buying habits have changed & I purchase many more things online (as I'm sure many of you do) and if I ever need anything that can be purchased via an Airline "Mall" I will go there to purchase, even if the end price is a few dollars higher.

This non-working relationship between Office Max and the United Mileage Plus Mall - where one side says that you have to speak to the other side & the other side doesn't know whom you have to speak to and when they finally refer you to what they think might be the right department, the right department is closed, even though it's during normal business hours (being on the East Coast, 3:30PM when I made the calls is during Normal Business Hours for every state in the US - they are based out of Ohio) has convinced me that maybe I shouldn't use the Mileage Plus mall for purchases (as they are not showing any interest in helping resolve an concern about a problem on the vendor end of a promotion they were running) and that I shouldn't use Office Max at all (everyone that I've spoken to so far does not have even half a clue as to where to even direct my call - I have a feeling that Office Perks isn't going to give me my answers & I'll be pleasantly surprised if they do).

I'm surprised that there are no more controls in place to verify that the purchase was made through the proper channels, or that UA doesn't have the right contact number for Office Max and can't give you any information other than a generic toll-free number from the website. I'm surprised that OfficeMax.com associates are practically clueless that there's even a business relationship with incentive based website organizations.

Moreso, I'm surprised that everyone is laying blame on someone else & not taking responsibility for an issue that concerns them...

I will get this resolved, eventually, but not without frustration, and not without Office Max leaving a bad taste in my mouth. I blame them more than Mileage Plus Mall because Mileage Plus overall has been very helpful & other transactions have posted as quickly as one can expect. However, although Mileage Plus is not directly responsible for the Mileage Plus Mall (see this link) (http://mileageplusmall.com/CustomerCare/TermsConditions.asp), I still feel that they should have some sort of control over what goes on as the Mileage Plus Mall uses their trademarked name. I tried calling Advantex Marketing (http://www.advantex.com/), the owners and operators of the Mileage Plus Mall and even though I called during their normal business hours, I got their recorded message. I will try again tomorrow. Mileage Plus needs to carefully select their marketing partners and if they choose one, they should make sure that their marketing partners are going to treat the customers the way they'd want their customers to be treated. It's pretty disappointing when the companies that you are a customer to are not providing the goods &/or services that they have promised.

******

I'm done venting for the time being...replies?

Is it worth the time and frustration just for that 5000 extra miles (assuming that you received/will recieve 2500 miles for the other purchase)?

I make a lot of purchases online and I feel that if I can miles for them, great, but if no, oh well.

If I'm paying for something, then I expect to get what was recieved. To me personally, it is worth it based on principles. Granted 7500 miles isn't all that much, but based on the fact that I (like many, many, others on this board and off this board) followed the terms & conditions of a promotion and the sponsors did not. Yes, it's a mere 7500 (or 5000) non-EQM's, but because they made an offer that they are not supporting, based on principles, I am willing to spend more time and energy than others do (yes, I have a life & yes, I have a job, and no, I don't have a lot of free time). I majored in Business Marketing in college - I currently work in the hospitality industry in the sales & marketing field of a major industry player. My company would honor it's word and has policies & controls in place to prevent this type of a thing from happening & if it were to happen, the problem would be immediately addressed & resolved to the customer's satsifaction. Apparently, it's not so with Office Max. It really does annoy me when promises are made & not kept. It's not about the 7500 miles - it's about the run-around & the taking of responsibility. It's about enticing and encouranging people to utilize their product and service, yet not delivering on what was promised.

I once had an issue getting 500 bonus miles from SPG for an online booking I made. I complained about it and instead of giving me 500 points for the online booking, they gave me 500 points for guest relations. Yeah, the "payout" is the same, but the fact that they were not willing to acknowledge that it was slighty a possible error on their side (and they told me that the miles were being credited from guest relations - basically to appease me - not because they were at fault or I was correct).

So, yes, to answer your question - it is worth the time & frustration. Why should one be a loyal customer and give their hard earned money to a company (or companies in this case - the Mileage Plus Mall operators, Office Max, and indirectly, Mileage Plus) that doesn't keep it's word or makes it extremely difficult to resolve an error on their side?

Thanks, bhatnasx, for following up on this. I too am very aggravated at not having the miles for my Office Max purchase posted. United and their partners have a responsibility to deliver what they promise. We shouldn't have to spend this much time and effort to get what is due us.

Same situation here.
Made an Office Max purchase on 12/19, charged to my Amex card on 12/23 and no miles posted as of yet. I wrote to the mall and they told me to write to Office Max, which I did. Office Max told me to wait 4-6 weeks for posting of the miles. When I replied wondering if they would be posted as of the purchase date so that I would receive the bonus miles I received no reply. As to the miles.... The general assumption is that they are worth around .02-.025 per mile so the 7500 miles is worth a decent sum to me at least. In the meantime, I am not making any purchases at OM online or physically until this is resolved.

I just called the Advantex Corporation & spoke to a very nice customer service rep named Kevin. He was very helpful and had said that he will have this complaint escalated to a higher level.

He also explained to me that although Advantex is responsible for the Mileage Plus Mall, there are three vendors on the Mileage Plus Mall that work directly with United - Office Max, FTD, and Wine.com - If anyone has any point posting issues or any other grievances with the Mileage Plus mall with any vendor, but these three, Advantex will be happy to assist and I think they will do a good job in doing so.

However, for issues with Office Max, FTD, and Wine.com, as those vendors have a "space" at the mall, but do not report their award reporting directly to Advantex, Advantex doesn't have much ability to make sure points post.

However, Kevin at Advantex has offered to assist in resolving this issue. I will be e-mailing him this thread and a link to Flyertalk so he & Advantex can see the negative effect that the issues with vendors represented will effect their business unless properly resolved.

I must by the odd ball in the bunch. My officemax posted within 7 days and the Dining Award posted very quickly as well. But I still have not seen the 7,500 miles.

Has anyone received the 7,500 miles yet? If so, what was the posting date of your last qualifying transaction?

Good News!

A little effort has paid off. I received a phone call from a concerned upper level member of Office Max's Corporate Marketing department. He has informed me that there issues that were beyond their control in terms of transactions posting. Also, as mentioned above, Office Max does its reporting directly to United and not via the 3rd party company, Advantex Marketing.

Essentially, from what I understood from my conversation with the Office Max representative, the procedures that were in place and the requests that Mileage Plus gives for transaction history via the UA Mileage Plus Mall do not have a space for the date of transactions posting. So for those that received the credit, but in 2004, the problem is in the process of being corrected. For those of us who have received no indication of miles/points/transactions with Office Max, this issue is in the process of being resolved and Mileage Plus will be receiving the data in the coming days. Also the problem with transaction dates and communicating purchases between the two organizations seems to be in the process of being rectified.

From my understanding, Office Max is processing all the information and will be submitting the required, correct, complete information to UA very shortly and from UA's end, the transactions will soon be posted with the proper dates and the proper bonus miles will posted as well.

Thank you to Advantex & Office Max & United Mileage Plus for paying attention and taking action and attending to this concern of mine and other customers. Hopefully the processes are corrected and this challenge will not happen again in the future.

SP03,it was worth the time and frustration to get this resolved. All the involved parties seem to have responded and seem to be taking appropriate measures to correct the situation and seem resolved to avoid having this kind of an issue again. As I said, it's not the miles that I really care about - it's the principles behind them. If everything does work out, I won't be so hesitant to make purchases from the United Mileage Plus Mall or Office Max in the future.

Thanks, bhatnasx, for the report and the good effort which hopefully will benefit a number of us.

I purchased from Office Max in December also and I have not had the miles posted to my account. And the 7500 means something to me.

If I don't get credit soon, I will be calling Office Max.

You're welcome, Karen. I would give Office Max & United at least week or so to sort this out. They are aware & working diligently to resolve this for all of their customers, but if for some reason the transaction and/or miles have not posted, then do contact them.

I'd just like to chime in and thank bhatnasx for all his/her hard work and time spending dealing with this. I have also been awaiting seeing my December purchase post, and, though I have paper documentation of everything, was not at all looking forward to dealing with it. It's great to hear that OM upper management is aware of the situation and is committed to doing something about it.

Thanks bhatnasx!

Same from here - thanks for all the efforts.

However, I am somewhat skeptical. Some month ago I had the same trouble with Office Max and United. It was only about 250+ or so miles. And I never got the miles. I was talking to supervisors at OM and United and did fax them several times the order ....
I finally convinced the United supervisor to credit me the 250 or so miles as a goodwill, which she did. She actually tried hard to resolve the problem and was very friendly ... but she was not able to resolve the problem...
Now I am waiting for some miles from Office Max again ... and the 5,000 bonus!

The problem in all this is "the system" and the solution is simple:

When you conduct a transaction with an airline mall partner, you enter into a mutually agreed sales contract which says that you are ordering X product bundled together with Y airline miles, and paying Z dollars for what you order. You routinely get an emailed or delivery receipt that gives the transaction date, product(s) ordered and itemization of charges. But there is no record of the miles which are a legally binding element of the sales contract!!!

The airlines, mall operators and individual merchants are notorious for blaming each other for missing mileage credits, bouncing around the customers who have fulfilled their contracted obligation and are now having to spend countless hours as amateur lawyers/investigators to get their entitlement.

The simple answer? The airline websites are the gatekeepers (the buck stops here). They should require that every merchant or other business partner give the mileage total on the same final page as the order and payment details.

It would easy for each merchant to add this feature routinely to the website checkout pages. The airlines should lock out any merchant or 3rd-party mall operator who won't do it.

My Office Max purchase was for a 99 cent box of pens - total was 1.04 after taxes. I just got an e-mail stating that purchases under 1.00 are not eligible. That's complete BS because I even called the Mileage Plus mall in regards to this before purchasing to make sure it was eligible to earn 4 miles. I just e-mailed them back explaining this.

Argh!

Editted to add: I just got of the phone with the Office Max person & he informed me that that was not the case. He also informed me that the he will be submitting the spreadsheet with all the reporting today and that we should expect the Office Max creditting to occur (hopefully) by the end of the week.

I just got a polite refusal from Mileage Plus refusing my request for 5000 miles from my Marriott stay. We stayed 4 nights, two in December (30 and 31st) and Jan 1 and 2nd. The bill was dated Jan 3rd. The 2 Dec nights satisfied the requirement but UA is refusing to honor it because of the Jan 3rd date. "The check-out date is used for the activity date". They suggest I contact Marriott and get 2 bills and split the dates.

Sorry, but I think that is outright pitiful by United to make me jump thru hoops like this. I offered to fax my statement showing the two Dec nights, and they never even replied to that.

Another Office Max Dec. 19 waitee here, and I also purchased plenty more than the minimum.

Finally Getting Somewhere!

Just got an e-mail from the Office Max representative. The base miles for Office Max (for me) have posted with the proper post date. The bonus miles will be posting later in the month when United does a "sweep" of all the accounts. If your base miles have posted (which they will hopefully do today, if not already), then you should expect your bonus miles to post towards the end of the month.

Hope this helps! Thank you, Office Max for helping resolve this concern as quickly and effectively as possible.

I wanted to touch base with you so your expectations are accurate. From what I know United recently posted the miles you earned from the order on 12/18/03, but have yet to post the bonus miles. According to what they told me they will be doing a sweep of the system that will add the bonus miles. They have already done one sweep and posted bonus miles on 2/6/04, and will be doing another sweep later this month. In that sweep I am assuming your bonus miles will be credited.

I had the same concern in December, after buying 99 cents worth a paperclips at OfficeMax. So several days later I bought $1.99 worth a batteries at Circuit City, which relatively quickly resulted in two miles being posted to my United account. That, along with an iDine purchase, did result in my 7,500 mile bonus being posted a couple of weeks ago. Still, as of this date, I got no miles from OfficeMax. Those four miles I won't pursue, since my "extra insurance" purchase at Circuit City did save the day.

They had posted points into my account with a Jan date for a purchase done in Dec. That means no 5000 point bonus unless I can somehow have the purchase date corrected. Can you give us the email address of the person at OfficeMax who helped you resolve your problem?

Thanks.

I had 2500 miles post 12/26 under the activity, "December Mileage Plus Gift". Was this for the promotion? I was expecting the full 7500.

I had trouble with a OfficeMax posting and called their customer service number. It seems they put in a new procedure to deal with these issues. They sent my info to someone else at OfficeMax who sent it via a spreadsheet to United. My miles were posted the next day on United with the correct order date. You may have tried this already but I would call their CS again, it seems they have gotten their act together. The number is 1-800-283-7674.

Just called OfficeMax and was told "United has changed their software, it may take up to 3 months for miles to post, can't do anything until then. Please call back".

Could whoever had email contact with OfficeMax forward me their contact information?

Thank you.

ALL,

Please do not e-mail me asking for the Office Max person's contact information. The person has requested that I do not publically display his contact information. I will try to contact the Office Max representative & request that he view this thread - I am not guaranteeing anything, but I am hoping that if you are still having challenges and you base, not bonus, miles for Office Max (and only Office Max - I don't have the contact info for Best Buy or B&N as some of you have requested) then the person at Office Max will see that you're having challenges (because you posted them) and they will be able to contact you if need be (assuming that you have your e-mail address listed).

I told the person at Office Max that I will not give publically give out his name or contact information as he requested. They are attempting to resolve this. If your base Office Max miles haven't posted, then post here - if your bonus miles haven't posted, then wait 6-8 weeks after the your base miles posted for UA to post the bonus. Note that this isn't 6-8 weeks after the POST DATE, but 6-8 weeks after the ACTUAL DATE they posted to your account.

Please stop e-mailing me requesting contact information for the Office Max person.

Thank you.

Call OfficeMax at 1-800-283-7674. Provide the following information if you have a Dec. 2003 order or earlier that has not posted:

Name
Order #
Order Date

Rep should forward your info to appropriate person for resolution.

Finally!

The December 18 Office Max miles posted to our accounts last night.
Now all that's left is the leisurely 6-8 week wait for the UA bonus miles. Maybe they really will do the aforementioned "sweep" at the end of this month. Not holding our breath though. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/rolleyes.gif

Anyone that has on OfficeMax order placed in December and have not received their base miles yet better call OfficeMax so they can make credit request with United. Any Dec. order should have posted by now. Give them the necessary info and they will take care of it.

This is the best way of resolving any issues with Office Max miles not posting. If your base miles have not posted, this is what you need to do. Office Max can't help you and get the items posted if they don't know that there's a problem.

Just called that 800 number menntioned above about my 12-18-03 purchase. 'Your purchase does reflect your MP account number, tvl4free. UNITED is making some changes. I can't tell you when your miles will be posted, but I can tell you that they will be posted.' Did not even want to hear about 'making some kind of report.'

So I hung up and called again, and FWIW the CS agent made a report. And so I wait.

Now, who else is offering miles? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Finally, at long last, my Office Max purchase from 12/19 posted after I received an email from Jennifer. Still have not had the 5000 bonus miles post to my UA account and have emailed them again. It was UA who told me to have OM work on the sale posting. 1 Down, 1 to go, but this one is for 5000 miles!

Remember - it's 6-8 weeks from when the OM miles post, not 6-8 weeks from the post date. Yes, this was a snafu on O.M.'s part, however they have worked to resolve this & correct their methodology. I spoke to a UA rep the other day and was informed that it would be 6-8 weeks from the date that the base miles post to your account (not 6-8 weeks from the post date) - so if your OM miles posted, then it'll be no more than 8 weeks (or whenever UA does the "sweep") to get the bonus miles posted.

Patience will pay off.

I called OfficeMax at the phone number previously mentioned in the thread. The CSR I spoke with seemed familiar with the issue and took all my information. He then verified my purchase in his database and told me that he would pass the data to the appropriate person to get the miles posted.

Fingers crossed

If you have a posted order date of 1/5/04(even though order was done in DEC.) but do not receive your bonus miles by the end of next week, call United at 1-800-421-4655. Ask about the HOLIDAY BONUS miles C7K. They should have posted your miles. I have heard different reports about when people should expect to receive their bonus miles. I would say the longest anyone should wait for their bonus miles to show up is 6-8 weeks after their order posted with United. If your 12-18-03 order finally posted on 2-10-04, then 6-8 weeks from the FEB. date. If you have not called OfficeMax about base miles posting, and your order is over 4 weeks old, call them at 1-800-283-7674 and provide them the necessary info so they can send to United. If you have already called them you should be fine. They seem to have a system in place where when people call they are getting taken care of.

My miles for my December order with Office Max still haven't showed up. As it was suggested, I called Office Max today at 1-800-283-7674 to ask them to post those miles. First, the representative was very anoyed by the fact that my only order for a 29-cent box of paper clips. She even told me that she didn't think that I would get any miles for such a small order. Second, she told me that it is not their problem that the miles didn't post. She said that about the same time when I placed my order United Mall changed their software and that might be why I don't see my miles in my account.

I have also emailed United Mall about the same issue but got no reply yet. What else can I do in this situation?

Check your accounts, looks like UA just did a sweep.

My OfficeMax order for 12/25 (shipped 12/28), was posted 1/5. UA posted only 2500. This morning an extra 5000 was added. The new entry has no description.

It seems OM/UA is working at it even without me calling and notifying of an error.
