I just did so on the SW Chief, and I have done so within the last year on the Auto Train. I always ask the server beforehand. They usually say to keep it discreet, and that is fine.

This is the credited answer, apparently, but lots of folks brought various thermoses or other beverages to lunch and dinner. One of the guys I sat with introduced himself as Crazy Pete, and I would not be surprised if his thermos contained something other than Evian.

Bottom line, I can't imagine anyone caring if you brought booze to dinner, although if I wanted to drink a nice bottle of wine with my meal, I might rather enjoy it in my own room rather than with three randoms.

To clarify: these are 750ml bottles of wine. And I uncork them in my roomette in advance, so there is not burden on the dining car server (except to bring extra plasticware). In the past, I have even brought my own wine glass (which are often for sale as a one-off in wine shops) -- that did get some raised eyebrows on the Empire Builder.
