Retirement Trip

Just sharing my excitement about my retirement Amtrak trip. Mostly relatively short (24 hour or so) legs so keeping my cost down by going mostly coach.

Sacramento - LA - San Diego
San Diego - LA - Tucson
Tucson - Houston
Houston - New Orleans
New Orleans - Charleston (West Virginia)
Charleston - Baltimore
Baltimore- Washington - Chicago
Chicago - Appleton (Wisconsin)
Appleton - Chicago - Sacramento (Zephyr)

Yes, roomette on the Zephyr.

I leave on May 18 and get home on July 4.

Have fun! I was just thinking last night of such a trip when I reach retirement in 3 years 9 months. I want a great circle trip around and the country.

Sounds like a sweet trip.

You might be able to save a bit more by using a $459, 15-day, 8 segment, Rail Pass for part of your trip.

Best travel wishes to you-grew up on an Amtrak pass, done all of US, most of VIA and Aussie(some Europe). You are in for some good times but please consider econ bedroom on other than CZ, for other than short legs. It truly makes the trip.
My AGR balance recently went over 60K! Thinking about doing a "all four corners" with only minimal connecting stops. Murky memory but last calculation was about 12 days, all spent on-board. Likely to have some "land-lubber" walking when done.

I am officially retired as of 5:00 PM EDT today.

On April 8 I will be embarking on my dream Amtrak trip. I fly first to YVR, and then travel to NOL, using Cascades, Empire Builder and City of New Orleans. All in either Business or Roomettes.

I am flying back to my home in the Carolinas, since the NB Crescent hits Greenville, SC and Charlotte at inconvenient times, specifically the middle of the night and I have already ridden the train, for the full distance, on two occasions, but not recently.

I congratulate the OP on his retirement, and hope that he will compose a trip report upon his return.

Some comments --

don't try to change trains in Charleston ! The OP will be doing New Orleans-Chicago-Charleston-Washington-Balt.

Chicago to Appleton will be by bus from Milwaukee

and have fun

That's a nice itinerary - and a great start to your retirement! After that, how about checking out the rest of the Amtrak system?

I've got an 11 day 10000+ mile train excursion coming up soon. Roomettes all the way! I ought to wait for retirement but I just can't. I wish I had your patience!
