Can an Amtrak award ticket be used on a later train?

We have upcoming award travel from BBY to EWR on a Northeast Regional service. We'd like to stop and see a friend at NYP for a couple of hours.

Can we disembark at NYP and take a later NYP-EWR train using our original ticket (which will have a different train # on it)?

I think this is not allowed: the e-ticket terms seem pretty clear that for "Reserved Service", "eTickets are only valid for the services listed." And they even say that "If you board a different train without notifying us, you will have to pay for it separately; the conductor cannot apply the money paid for your prior reservation."

But am I missing something? We are happy to buy a separate NYP-EWR rail trip (probably wouldn't be Amtrak…), just curious whether it's possible to jury-rig a stopover into the trip in a way that's consistent with the award program rules.

No, you can't work in a stopover on this award itinerary. Luckily, you can just take NJ Transit from NYP-NWK.

I think it can be done. It is not a "stopover" since it does not involve an overnight. Call AGR and ask. The worst they can say is no and you take NJT instead. If they say yes, you save a couple of dollars.

The overnight is meaningless. It's a stopover, and it's not permitted on the same award ticket.

It is permitted. Per the AGR Redemption Guidelines:
Where a published route requires a connection between two segments, a later connecting service may be chosen as long as it departs on the same date as the connection originally offered.

But a connection is not required on a BBY-EWR award: There are direct services offered on that route.

What occurs if a conductor scans the ticket and the train # and/or date don't match up?

They make you buy a new ticket or get off at the next stop.
