BOS to PTH (1 zone?)

(1) Is Boston to Port Huron a 1 zone redemption?

(2) Could one validly detrain at Chicago and skip the Chicago to Port Huron piece of the voyage?

Boston to Port Huron via Chicago is a two-zone redemption.

Even though Port Huron appears to be a zone border city, there is no direct service to any Eastern Zone destinations, so it is only a Central Zone city. Even if it had service from the Eastern Zone, travel via Chicago from Boston would pass through two zones and would be a two-zone redemption. Based on that, there is no hidden city advantage to booking POS-PTH via CHI and discarding the CHI-PTH segment. It's two zones regardless.

If one really wants to get (most of the way) to Port Huron via Amtrak, train to Toledo, thruway bus to Detroit (a 1-zone AGR redemption), and friend with car on I-94 is one way to do it.

If the inquiry is just scouting tricks to get to CHI as a 1-zone award please ignore this post.
