Anyone every used IAP and made a change mid trip to add a stopover? The agent I spoke with over the phone seemed to indicate that this was possible but didn't know if the ticket would reprice and according to what rules. I am looking at using Air New Zealand and want to add a stopover to AKL on the way back from RAR to LAX but the direct flight is the cheapest route but only offered on certain dates.

Just two posts above yours is the answer. No.

Earning airmiles on a companion fare?

I booked a flight on JAL w/ the International Airline Program. Both my wife and I were issued "X" fare tickets (which the JAL forum told me is an actual business class fare), but her ticket as expected showed a price of $0 + taxes.

I was going to have them attach either her AS or AA Gold account to the reservation, just to see what happens. Does anyone think one or the other is more likely to earn credit since both are partners?

Not sure if this needs to be under Amex, AA, or JAL. Mods, help?

The companion ticket should not earn miles, but it may happen. The airline which operates the flight awards the miles, but check the rules of each program to verify that X is an eligible bucket.

(Not directly related, but Ms mia recently made a transatlantic flight on BA using an award ticket purchased with AA miles and with her AAdvantage number in the record. She received AA miles for the flight.)

What was the result of your attempt?

In my experience, both the paid ticket and the free companion ticket book into the same inventory bucket. Often, the paid fare starts with a full-fare letter, but the inventory required for both tickets is a discount fare bucket, even though the full-price fare paid would normally book into a bucket corresponding with its first letter.

I'm not sure how they know not to award miles to the free ticket. For some carriers, I think they rely on the check-in agent to make sure that there's no FFN associated with the free ticket at check-in, as the downstream systems can't block the miles otherwise. I suspect it's highly carrier-dependent.

Data point: summer 2016 my wife and I did the 2-for-1 deal with tickets on Lufthansa (we each have Plat cards). We gave our United MP numbers for ourselves and our daughters. I'm not sure which of us were set up as the freebie tickets, but all four of us received both United miles (inc. 50% bonus) and Premier qualifying miles (200% of actual mileage).

We just booked an almost identical deal, LAX-NRT for Oct. 2017. It looks like JAL wants the business. Combined with the 5x MR points on the charge it's turned into a compelling benefit.

Little curious about this one. Currently on JL, discount business ("Business Special") is available for ~$3,400 RT LAX-NRT during that timeframe, while full fare business ("Business Normal") is ~$17,000 RT for the same timeframe. So either the fares have changed enormously since you booked, or IAP has access to something different than what JL sells directly?

My JL route is open jaw, but both my fare and the award fare booked into X.

As did mine, for the trip back in December of 2015. I'm glad to know it's still available, I may take advantage of it again soon.

You mean the paid ticket got priced at X (as opposed to requiring X availability)? That's pretty good.

I logged in and was looking at the ETicket today, and am now concerned about something - the Fare basis & endorsements do not match.

The paid ticket has "/IAPCN" and the comp ticket is "/IAPCP". This is correct.

But both tickets have "IAPCP NO CMP FFP MILES" in the endorsements. That should only be true of the free ticket. Because the FB is accurate, do I need to call Amex to get this fixed so I earn miles on the paid fare? Or will AA (where I'm crediting) go off of the FB.

Yes, we saw the same prices online, but the IAP offered us two tickets for $5391. I later modified the res to return from Osaka instead of NRT, but the price remained the same.
