AMEX points devalued after canceling gold card?

I recently canceled both my gold cards (personal and business) and noticed the price of Amex reward flights have went up dramatically. I was looking at a round trip flight to Munich before canceling and the price was ~$1k or ~140k points. Now after canceling both cards I am getting a quote of around 220k points even though the USD price hasn't changed (in fact it went down slightly).

Am I crazy? Did I misread something or did my points devalue after canceling my gold cards?

Thanks!

Well, I just spoke with a support rep who confirmed that this is indeed the case. Since I canceled the gold cards I lowered my membership level and lost my MR discount for flights and lost the ability to transfer points to airlines.

I have to call back tomorrow to speak with a "Sr. Account Specialist".

I'm not sure what they're going to tell you. It's fairly well documented that there are multiple levels of MR, and that the lowest level doesn't come with the ability to transfer to airlines. The good news is that if you once again get a card that comes with the standard MR level and link it to your existing MR account, all of your previous MR points are once again available for redemption on the better terms.

Your account is now enrolled in Membership Rewards Express. To fix this at no cost apply for the free card discussed in this thread, and link to the same Membership Rewards account:
