Is it still possible to get the amex reimbursement if the EC fee gets credited back to the Plat card? Or do we have to make sure that the fee gets credited to the card used for the ticket purchase when making the call to delta?

If I'm understanding OP, that must be the way it works -- for whatever reason when delta cancels your ticket, they credit the EC payments to the card used for the ticket purchase not the EC purchase. Weird if true, but cool if true.

I thought that some airlines give you a very hard time about cancelling ancillary purchases even with refunded tickets. I think this is one that I'm going to wait for more people to post experiences about before I would attempt.

It doesn't seem that complicated. The upside is a statement credit to use to purchase anything you want any time you want, which is more valuable than DL gift cards for those who might not be paying for DL travel on a regular basis.

Does the amex credit come back in $200 chunk. Or is it $79, $79, and $42.

does it only work on delta? what about other airlines?

with $200 one year and $200 the next ... it seems that it would only offset for 1 AF. Is there a way to do it regularly to keep the card, or is it only meant for year 1 then cancel?

If used correctly, one can get a credit for $400 offsetting the majority of the $450 fee for the Platinum fee.

The way it works:

-register for DL

-buy a non-refundable (int'l) DL
ticket (even on another card) that has at least 3 segments or 3 passengers

-purchase 3X $79 in EC (divided in 3 transactions) on your plat card

-after 4 min to 24 hours, call Delta to cancel the ticket sbd ask for a refund. Make sure to mention EC refund. (you can do this online, but its sometime a PITA to have everything credited correctly)

-the ticket itself will remain a pending charge and will disappear in a few days

-the EC charge will post in a day or two, as will the EC refund 'from Delta'

-within 3 days (or 2-3 weeks) you'll see a reimbursement by Amex
So commit fraud, basically?

At least with the gift card, I have actually purchased something.

I agree with this critique..
although OP is trying to be helpful,
the solution is more complicated and risky
than the original problem deserves.

I have the PLAT from the recent 100K promo,
already reimbursed from one AA miles trip, $85 of fees.

If I don't do another AA trip, I may do the GC option.
It seems much easier than buying and
refunding some Int'l ticket on the 24-hour rule.

In a pinch, as I am not really flying much anymore,
I could get 85-90% of AA GC value from Plastic Jungle.

You've purchased something that explicitly violates what Amex says is reimbursable. So with your gift card, you've committed theft, basically?

Not quite as blatantly as some others:
