AA's system will not sell gift cards to anyone with New Jersey info in their AMEX profile (and possibly AA profile). Your purchase will usually appear to go through, but when you try to activate the card a few days later it will be invalid.
You need to either choose another airline for this reimbursement, or cleanse your AMEX profile of NJ addresses and phone numbers, and possibly your AA profile as well.

I bought two $100 gift cards on September 10. It came up as a $200 charge instead of two $100 charges. I bought them on September 10th and I was reimbursed today.

You must select the airline before making the purchase. You may call customer service to beg for an exception, but they will ask what you purchased and giftcards are excluded by rule (but not in practice). I would wait until tomorrow, and then make a new purchase.

I just received my new platinum card and have to use the $200 before 12/31. I want to buy gift cards for a trip in march of 2015.
AMEX customer service told me that I have to pay for the entire plane ticket using the enrolled card, then covered incidentals will be reimbursed.
Anyone have any luck with just opening a card and getting the $200 credited right away?
