"Domestic" Same Day Confirmed Flight Change (SDFC, SDC, CFC, and "Standby")
"AA Domestic" here includes Canada, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and the Caribbean

N.B. Different than "standby"; see link.

NOTE CHANGED POLICY: June 2018 - E class availability is not (or no longer) definitive on whether SDFC may happen. "Other" aspects may be taken in to consideration. Seems few other changes but it is now clear that passengers in domestic premium cabins can SDFC at no charge. More here: Guide: New SDFC / Same Day Flight Change Restrictions 8 Jun 2018

NOTE CHANGED POLICY: As of 15 January 2016 the SDFC option will be limited to alternate flights only if they follow the same origin, destination, and also SAME CONNECTION POINT. Other rules seem to be unchanged as far as available 24-hours before, no charge to CK, EXP or up to three companions on the same PNR, no co-terminals allowed, and slight overlap to calendar date limitation for late night may be possible. Domestic segments that are part of a domestic and international itinerary are generally not eligible.

NOTE 1 re upgrades: To effectively use SDFC you must call to downgrade first. If you SDFC successfully then, you may request an upgrade on your new flight.

NOTE 2 re Upgrades. On SDFC, for e500 or EXP UDU the original upgrade request time stamp remains on the upgrade request; with SWU, you will get a new time of request time stamp. (It's useful not to check in for ~10 minutes after you SDFC or you may find yourself in a pickle with upgrade requests.)

NOTE 3 re PreCheck / KTN: For an unknown reason, going on to SDFC May delete or eliminate your Known Traveler number for the record, so your PreCheck will likely not be granted. You'll have to call or have the ticket counter restore your KTN. (According to reports in May 2018, this does not seem to be a pervasive issue any longer).

N.B. This thread relates to AA "domestic" changes only, for international same day changes see this thread.

Same-Day Flight Changes
Did you know you can change your domestic flight† and get a confirmed seat for a $75 (non-refundable) charge? The option is available on all fares in the Main Cabin. For $75 you can confirm a seat on a different flight as long as the alternate flight:

1. Has the same origin AND destination
2. Is the same calendar day of departure
3. Has eligible seats available ("E" fare inventory for all fares)

We continue to offer the same-day stand by option for an earlier or later domestic flight for select customers at no charge. See above link for list of select customers.

We now have four convenient options to make same-day flight changes:
1. Online: Beginning 24 hours prior to departure, you can request a same-day flight change on aa.com through the check-in window. Just select each passenger who is requesting a flight change and pay the non-refundable $75 per passenger charge.

2. Over the Phone: Beginning 24 hours prior to departure, you can call Reservations and our agents will provide information for available flights departing on the same day as your original flight. The non-refundable $75 charge can be paid over the phone via credit card.

Once you arrive at the airport, you can check in for your new flight at Curbside Check-In, Self-Service Check-In, or our ticket counter.

3. At a Check-In Kiosk: Beginning 12 hours prior to departure, the Self-Service Check-In machines will provide a list of available flights for the same day as your original flight. Just choose the flight, pay the non-refundable $75 charge, and complete the check-in process. You will receive a boarding pass for your newly confirmed flight and a receipt for the charge.

4. At the Ticket Counter: Beginning 24 hours prior to departure, our agents can provide a list of available flights for the same day as your original flight. Just choose the flight and pay the non-refundable $75 charge. You will receive a boarding pass for your newly confirmed flight and a receipt for the charge.

Same-day flight changes are subject to Terms and Conditions.

Nuances and Loose Rules
Now for the hard part: figuring out where the flexibility is in the rules. This list is compiled from the responses to people saying "Can I do X?" where X is something that is not clearly permitted by the rules. One's likelihood of success here depends a bit on the method used for the SDC. (Note: this is a work in progress and your contributions/corrections are appreciated!)

For each item, the following codes apply:
Y = possible using any method
A = possible using an agent (phone/counter), perhaps having to HUACA
A* = mixed reports of success with an agent (phone/counter)
N* = possible only if you find a very accommodating agent
N = little or no reported success.
  • Violating various non-routing fare rules (day/time, minimum stay, etc.): A* (see post 1020)
  • Change to flight with no E fares available (day/time, minimum stay, etc.): A* (see [http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/25099215-post1111.html"]post 1111)
  • Change routing with E avails but keep same number of connections, i.e BOS-ORD-LAX to BOS-DFW-LAX ??
  • Change destination to an entirely different place: N
  • Change destination to a co-terminal (e.g. LGA -> JFK): A* (see post 1081, post 1114 & this blog post )
  • Change destination to ultra-close airport non-coterminal airport (e.g. JFK-> LGA): ??
  • Change itinerary at the beginning to include illegal layovers (> 4 hours): A (1 of 1 getting an EP phone agent to create 8+ hr layover)
  • Change itinerary at the layover point (using kiosk, app, or agent) to create an otherwise illegal layover: ??
  • Change itinerary at the beginning to add a layover point not permitted by the routing rules: ??
  • Change itinerary at a layover point to add another layover not permitted (either in terms of number of segments or routing rules) by the routing rules: ??
  • Change to a flight exactly 24 hours before or after the original flight: ??
  • Change to a flight exactly 24 hours before the original flight, if the previous day's flight has been delayed: Y (based on one report)

I am not trying to change my first flight, I am not changing origin, destination or connection point. The mobile app shows Confirmed as available but errors out while aa.com shows only standby. What gives?

I recently had a similar issue, although I was in J already, on LAX-SFO.

The app indicated that there as a confirmed seat on next flght departing in 30 mins. All other flights I'd have to go standby. I proceeded with the option of confirming the change but the app wouldn't allow me to select a seat and indicated that I needed to see gate agent.

I was in the AC and asked the agent there to take a look at it. He tried several things before saying they upgraded early and I should have the seat. He indicated I need to go the gate now and he'd call them to fix the issue. Well, by the time I got to the Nest, boarding was just abut to start (early). I get my boarding pass and it's in Y. Agent and the sup there just shrugged their shoulders and said " It's what the system did and I needed to speak with customer service... Lies... I just walked away and boarded (sole one) in group 2.

Fast forward 90 mins, we never take off as there is a ground hold in SFO, we return to the gate, plane is to be refueled and start boarding in 20 mins.

I visit the AC and ask agent to check if I could be confirmed on a later flight. He notes that I was in Y a CK in F decided not to go to SFO and he moved me into F. Then he announces that SFO is baording (early) and few people peeled out for the gate. He then tells me that the gate agents upgraded someone (again) in F and he was downgrading them. He called the gate and told me go board now.

It was a pleasure to be dealing with the same gate agents and to see them squirm trying to downgrade a passenger and place me in F. The back and forth talk they both had was amusing as they said the AC agents be pulling all sorts of stuff that they shouldn't be doing.... blah, blah, blah... LOL

I tried to SDC to a slightly later both of which has E available (no change in routing), but I was told by two different EXP agents that I couldn’t because my original inventory wasn’t available. Has something changed in the last couple of years? I’ve been away from AA for awhile.

UPDATE: I guess third time is the charm as the the third agent was able to make the change in less than two minutes.

On a paid discount premium cabin fare (I), is it still possible to SDC to a different flight provided there's simply a premium cabin seat available (regardless of I or E fare inventory on the new flight)?

I'm flying tomorrow. There are 6 MCE and 11 Priority seating seats left and no regular seats on a 737. 6 people are on standby. I'm trying to figure out whether anyone has a sense on how the system would assign a seat to the folks on standby. Does it assign rear to front? Randomly? Just trying to prepare for whether someone will be seated beside us (we are in a priority seating row). TIA

The "system"-aka-the-GA will likely assign the best seats available (F if the standbys listed for F, then MCE, then Priority)...

Is there a limit to the number of times you can SDFC the same reservation? E.x. if you're ticketed on a 6:30 PM flight and there are flights at 6:30 AM and 8 AM, and your first choice would be the 8AM but your 2nd choice was the 6:30 AM, can you SDFC to the 6:30 AM at T24 to guarantee yourself an early morning shot, and then try for the 8AM at T24 for that flight?

How does the app/.com handle the 130AM LAX-MIA flight, if I’m booked on the 1130PM Sunday, will it let me go to the 130AM Monday or only the 130AM Sunday? If it’s the latter, I assume an agent can override this if I’m the in the former situation?

How does SDC on first class work? Do you lose your upgrade if you SDC on an upgraded (complimentary UDU) ticket as EXP? What about if you confirm an upgrade with a SWU?

Complicated Same Day Confirmed Questions

Don't know what I was thinking when I booked this flight. Monday from GSP-DFW, long layover, then Tuesday from DFW-BUR

I've read the same day rules, but not sure how tight or strict each one is? Would still like to leave Monday evening, but either get home much sooner, or layover in Dallas even longer so I can work remote the entire workday.
  • I cannot layover in Charlotte instead?
  • Can I request standby for either Monday OR Tuesday since my flight covers both?
  • Can I request to go to LAX instead of Burbank? Burbank is usually more expensive, so this would be a win for AA
  • Can I request same day standby once I get to Dallas for an earlier flight for that segment?

Sometimes the remaining seats on flights to LAX cost more than flights to Hollywood Burbank.
If it cheaper to fly to LAX, cancel your booking and fly to LAX. You get full credit for canceled tickets, then you can you apply that credit to a new bookin
As stated in the terms: (And they are usually strict on them):
Must be Elite to standby for a later flight
Flight must be same day
Flights must include the same number of stops in the same airports
Yes, you can ask for standby when you get to the first stop
Given the number of people now traveling, I would be hesitant to standby for later flights, especially if your status is only Gold as the profile indicates, but YMMV.

How does Same-Day Standby work for a flight with a connection, if it works at all? I could imagine friction at the connection point(s). For example, on a two-segment standby, if a passenger makes it onto the first segment, it's no guarantee he/she would make it onto the second segment, and there lies a problem.

I could therefore imagine two possibilities:
  1. AA not allowing standby on connecting itineraries, or
  2. AA allowing standby on connecting itineraries, but, the airport agent will suggest to the passenger which sets of flights have plenty of seats available (and therefore good standby chances)
One other complication is I would probably have a piece of checked luggage. Would that disqualify one from standby? (IIRC, officially it's within the capabilities and policies of the airline to accommodate the checked bags of standby passengers. But unofficially, I could imagine some airport agents either frowning upon that, or not allowing standby at all on that basis.)

I changed my flight by an oversold automatic volunteer option from GSP-DFW-LAX to GSP-DFW-BUR... with almost a 24 hour layover. First flight is Monday at the 7 pm hour, second aka final flight is Tuesday at 7 pm hour.

Will I be allowed to so a same day standby or confirmed for Monday night's DFW-LAX flight instead since my flight BEGAN on Monday, even if that segment, while part of the same itinerary, did not happen until Tuesday? I guess I'll find out in a few hours.

I have personally stood by for connecting itineraries many times. If you made it onto your first segment but not the second segment, you will be rolled to the next flight for the second segment. If the next flight is the next day, lodging and other expenses are on you, but typically AA will still honor the standby.

Your bags theoretically will go onto your proposed standby itinerary regardless of whether you make it. But it might also get onto an earlier flight than you if you proposed a longer layover in the connecting city - then it will end up in the destination baggage service desk. It might also take a direct flight. Or as with all checked bags, it might get delayed/gone missing.

I see! Thank you.

I was perusing itineraries for a few different trips this summer, and noticed some which I might ultimately try to standby for (that is, ticket something, then standby for an earlier option day-of). Funny you mention the notion of the next flight being the next day... since flights are sparser these days, some flights might indeed be the next day.

Agreed that checked luggage becomes a bit of a gamble. Sigh.

If I'm reading the Wiki correctly, AA doesn't allow reroutes. Ever had success with that?
