Transportation vouchers issued by American Airlines or American Eagle® are valid for travel on American Airlines, American Eagle, US Airways and American Airlines codeshare flights (AA*).
These vouchers are also valid for travel on oneworld® itineraries (including oneworld affiliates that must be booked as a codeshare flight marketed by a oneworld carrier) where American Airlines or American Airlines codeshare flights (AA*) is the international carrier.
Note: For oneworld itineraries, international flights are defined as transatlantic, transpacific and flights to and from South America. Flights to and from Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, or Central America are not included.
Travel agents may accept American Airlines vouchers (042/043) for full or partial payment for a ticket as an "exchange" document/ticket. If the voucher is less than the ticket the additional monies are collected. If the voucher exceeds the ticket cost an MCO will be issued for the difference as a residual indicating non-refundable and for American Airlines transportation only. Valid one year from date of issue ((you must encumber the voucher before one year has expired since issuance*). There is no change fee/ASC associated with using a voucher. Updated 18 Feb 2015.)

How do vouchers work on AA?

What can I use the vouchers on?

500-mile domestic upgrade stickers (at the airport only).
Co-payments for upgrades or reduced mileage awards.
Excess baggage fees.
Special handling fees (e.g., checked pets), with a traveling passenger (i.e., not cargo).
Change fees, provided an additional collection of the fare is also being made.
There are special considerations if you are located in the following countries:
In the UK, Belgium, Germany and France, vouchers are accepted for Net fares.
In Switzerland, vouchers are accepted on Q and L class Net fares only.
In Ireland, vouchers are accepted in Q, O and L class Net fares only.
Can I use the vouchers for ANYTHING else?
Are there restrictions on purchasing airfare?
Unlike other airlines that place restrictions on certain fares/dates/times/routes, AA vouchers are just like cash, so you can use them to buy all fares that are available for purchase.
How long do I have to use the vouchers?
One (1) year from date of issuance.
What if I lose a voucher?
Sorry, you're out of luck. Treat your vouchers like cash.
Can I use the vouchers to buy tickets for someone else?
While vouchers are non-transferable, you may buy a ticket in someone else's name, so long as you are the one presenting the voucher (either by phone or personally at a ticket counter/office). If someone else presents the voucher, the ticket MUST be issued in the name of that on the voucher.
Is there a fee for using the vouchers?
As of April 2007, there appears to have been a policy change, so ticketing with vouchers by phone is no longer subject to the $20 fee.
It appears that ticketing at an airport ticket office is still subject to a charge of $30, unless you are EXP.
Note that if you are EXP, these "booking" fees are waived (and any AAgent that tells you otherwise is wrong). (thanks SquareDanceGuy)

What happens to the taxes?
This depends on the type of voucher. The following voucher codes are exempt from some of the taxes:
DI, DV (Voluntary Bump), BC, BD, CE, DB, DG, DV, IT, PS (Customer Service), CC, CI
Basically, if you use these vouchers to pay for the whole cost of your fare, you will lower the overall costs as some of the taxes do not apply. (thanks uncle wiggly) If you make a partial payment with vouchers, then the associated taxes will likewise be reduced by the same proportional amount. (thanks marshall)
OU is the only voucher taxable, as it's issued against the unused portion of a ticket that has been exchanged (amongst other things). (thanks hillrider)
What if the value of my vouchers exceed the value of my fare? Do I lose it? (thanks ffay005)
Unlike other airlines, you do NOT lose the residual value of your vouchers. If the residual value is more than $5, AA will mail you another voucher back as change, and this voucher is valid for one (1) year after its issuance. (thanks whynotfly)
How many vouchers can I use at one time?
According to the AAgent (who was very helpful), NINE (9) was the maximum number of vouchers accepted by her system.
I bought AA tickets from a 3rd party (e.g., travel agent, internet travel site, Priceline/Hotwire). Can I use the vouchers retroactively?
How long does it take to process the vouchers?
After they receive the vouchers, AA will process them within 1-3 days, so it's really dependent on how long it takes the mail to arrive to Florida. It is recommended that if you need to ticket within 2 weeks that you go directly to an Airport Ticket Office, who can process your vouchers immediately.
How do I apply vouchers to a reservation I have on hold on AA.com?
1) Call Web Services at 1-800-222-2377 or 1-918-832-1384 (6:00 a.m. - 2:00 a.m. CT, 7 days a week). In the UK, call 08-45-601-0619, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. UK time, Monday-Friday.
2) Give them the PNR and tell them you would like to apply vouchers.
3) They will give you instructions on how to send the vouchers in.
4) Pay any balance with a credit card.

(Note: vouchers are not processed sequentially based on date of voucher received at Milton Pensacola, but rather on flight dates. Flights may show as "Ticket Pending" once the voucher has been applied, and at some time prior to flight (two weeks is usual) it will show "Ticketed" and you should be able to see your ticket number, beginning with "001", in your receipt from your itinerary at aa.com or in your e-Ticket.)
What if I entered a Business ExtrAA number?
You will have to contact Business ExtrAA to apply the vouchers. Their number is 1-800-433-1790, and they are available 5:00 a.m. - 12:00 midnight (CT) 7 days a week.
What if I live outside the United States and I want to use vouchers? (thanks ffay005)
For residents of the UK or Europe, the best bet would probably to call the UK Web Services desk (0845 601 0619, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. GMT, Monday-Friday). Otherwise, you can call your local reservations number (since you will likely have to pay the fee anyway), or visit your local Airport Ticket Office.
In all likelihood, you will be asked to mail your vouchers to Florida, so if time is of the essence you should consider going directly to an ATO, who can process it immediately.
3/12/15: I made reservations on 1/11/15 for a 3/23/15 flight, partially paid for with a voucher. The status appeared as "Unknown" until 2/16/15, when it changed to "Ticket Pending". Phone reps told me that "Ticket Pending" means the voucher has been received and the packet is in the queue for final ticketing. The reservation was not "Ticketed" until 3/10/15, 2 weeks before the date of travel. Similarly, my credit card was not charged until 3/10, either. The iPhone AA app said "Ticketed" following 2/16, apparently in error.
Just wanted to share my experience using an American Airlines paper voucher that I received for a voluntary bump (code DV), especially the struggle in getting taxes removed. I put a reservation on hold through the AA website and went to the airport yesterday morning to pay at the ticket desk using the voucher. The voucher was for $500 and the ticket total was about $531. I informed the agent that the voucher was tax exempt, and I used my phone to show the part on AA.com where it says "Transportation vouchers are tax exempt. Exception- vouchers with code OU are taxable." The base fare of the flight was about $461, and I used this site to tell her that US (domestic flight) ZP, and AY do not apply. She told me I was wrong and that only the $35 booking fee was waived, but I still had to pay taxes and thus owed $31. I then told her that the confusion regarding the taxes was apparently so common that there were internet sites created to assist travelers in explaining to agents that the voucher is tax exempt, and that if she called the tariff desk they might be able to finish the process. She again told me I was wrong, that I was not tax exempt, that I had to pay taxes, and that she was not going to call the tariff desk for something she already knew. That was a response I was not expecting. So, I used my debit card and paid the $31.
At the flight gate I talked to the AA employee at the counter and explained the situation, asking him how I could go about getting a refund. He told me taxes applied to vouchers and the woman at the desk was right. I told him that my understanding was that taxes do not apply, but that AA agents commonly incorrectly believe they do. Apparently this is not a nice comment to say, because he kind of scowled at me and told me I would have to wait till my destination location and talk to a desk agent there.
So I arrive at my destination and wait in a rather long line to talk to an agent. I attempted to explain the situation and showed my receipts and the information on the AA website. She cut me off half way through and asked why I was tax exempt and where my tax exempt paperwork was. I told her that I personally was not tax exempt, but that the voucher was tax exempt. She told me that the website only meant the booking fee was waived (even though the website says taxes are waived) and that I was wrong. I asked if she could call the tariff desk, she said no. I asked if there was a supervisor I could speak to, she told me there were a lot of people waiting and she was not getting a supervisor to tell me what she already told me, that I have to pay taxes just like any other customer.
Okay...so 2 attempts and 0 results. This was turning into a lot of work to get my $31 back, but it was my money and multiple websites have confirmed that AA agents do not know their own AA policy on vouchers. So, I called the AA number and explained the situation to the agent on the phone and my experience with the desk agents. She was friendly and polite and put me on hold to talk to a supervisor. She came back on and said....It's Tax Exempt.....and I should not have been charged about $50 in taxes. I asked why the two desk agents I spoke to were both unaware of that policy and why they couldn't have just done what she did to get the answer (it was a rhetorical question as I would expect she had no idea who the desk agents were or why they acted the way they did). She apologized and after about 30 minutes on the phone told me the credit was processed and I'd be getting the remainder of the voucher, about $22, mailed to me.
In the end, I suppose it might just depend on who the Agent is that you talk to at the desk and whether they 1) know the correct rules regarding vouchers, and/or 2) if they don't know or are unsure are willing to ask a supervisor. I'm thinking the agents I spoke too either honestly believed that the vouchers were not exempt, or were not sure but did not want to go and ask another person. It seems odd that this issue hasn't been resolved with a simple memo to all employees RE: paper vouchers, or a modification on the computer program to prompt agents using paper vouchers that not all taxes apply and to do "x,y,z" to price and process the ticket correctly. But, it's not my airline, so I don't really have a say in what they do regarding their SOPs. For anyone else that reads this and uses a paper voucher, If you receive push back from the agent about the taxes I would recommend getting a supervisor or just paying it and calling AA to have them reimburse the charge. I don't like arguing with a customer service agent, especially if I'm confident I'm right and they aren't budging, and even more especially when there is a line of other people waiting and I need to get on a flight leaving soon.

On a related note, and because I couldn't find the answer in the sticky above, does anyone know if you can hold a reservation on aa.com and then have it ticketed using your paper voucher at a physical (city/non-airport) AA ticketing office?

I'll ask the question in reverse - I've got a USAir voucher and would like to book an AA flight (and actually use my Alaska # ). I'm guessing that I should be able to do so (at least simply book the AA flight) pretty soon. Thoughts?
To the best of my knowledge, that's one of the many questions that don't have an official answer yet so anything anyone says is speculation. Since mix and match of flights just started yesterday, I'd say call AA about using the vouchers for desired flights on either carrier. If you get a "no", call US and ask them. The worst that can happen is that you can't use the vouchers on US metal yet and you could get the response you want.
You can certainly book an AA flight - that started yesterday. Unfortunately no one knows yet if you can use a US voucher to pay for it (or vice versa in the OP's situation). So all you can really do is get speculation here or call AA (or US for the OP) and ask. Of course, you've got an additional wrinkle - crediting your AS account. That's probably not possible today - you can only credit to US or AA since AS isn't a US partner. There's also the pretty obvious - with merger integration proceeding forward, today's answer can change at any time.
