Peculiarities: MIA can be affected by summer tropical storms and hurricanes. Knock-on effects during lengthy IROPS can manifest themselves systemwide. At peak times (e.g. early morning arrivals), arrivals processing and terminal facilities can get very crowded.

Official MCT / Minimum Connection Times for MIA (assuming same terminal):
NOTE: Though 1:35 is the given MCT International to Domestic (and 1:35 international to international), one should not consider that useful for everyone connecting international to domestic unless one has Global Entry or luck.
International arrivals at MIA requires most passengers to fill out a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Declaration Form 6059B - one per family - process U.S. Immigration, retrieve baggage at arrivals carousels, process through U.S. customs, re-check baggage, proceed to either the TSA connections security processing queue or landside and process TSA security (with onward boarding pass) to return airside. (Read on for exceptions.)
This does not apply if you are connecting international to international and have red "ITI" tags on your checked baggage. You will have to produce the Form 6059B and still pass through USCBP, albeit without baggage.
Other than for U.S. passport holders and passengers with USDHS ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization under the Visa Waiver Program), who may use kiosks that expedite the arrivals process, Immigration, Customs and TSA Security queues can at times be tortuous and one would do better scheduling a connection time closer to 2:30 (or even 3:00) for a comfortable international to domestic or to international connection for non-ESTA / non-U.S. passport holders.
If one is enrolled in Global Entry and can use the dedicated kiosks and expedited queues, the process is speediest as there are clearly marked queues after the self-clearing kiosks and one is not required to possess a Form 6059B.

Do I have time to go to Miami or Miami Beach?
Downtown Miami Due to increased security checkpoint wait times, you should allow yourself at least 3 hours between connections if you do not have Priority or Pre✓. A taxi to the city center should take approximately 12-17 minutes and will cost approximately $22. Because traffic to and from the airport can be unpredictable, consider taking the Metrorail Orange Line in lieu of a taxi. It is a 15-minute ride from the airport to the city center and trains run every 10-15 minutes except late nights. A roundtrip is $4.50.
Miami Beach Allow at least 3 hours between connections due to the possibility of heavy traffic on the highways between the beach and the mainland. A taxi to the beach should take approximately 22-27 minutes and will cost $35 (flat rate) if going south of 63rd Street. For reference, South Beach and most of the tourist spots are south of 23rd Street. Consider taking the 150 Miami Beach Airport Express bus from the airport to the beach. It is a 31-minute ride from the airport to the Lincoln Road Mall and buses run every 20 minutes. A roundtrip is $4.50.

Hey everyone. Anyone ever use the Miami Tri-Rail to leave Miami Airport? How long would you say it takes from departing your plane, to using the Miami Mover to arrive at the tri-rail station?
It apparently leaves every hour. My flight would arrive 26 minutes before the train departure. If I missed it, I'd have to wait 1h 26m, which would make an Uber look a little better.

Quick question for regular int'l flyers into MIA. Flying to MIA mid-May from ZRH and then connecting to an AA flight to MCO 2h after arrival. Is this doable or can someone recommend a VIP transfer option perhaps?
Thank you!
Thank you!

Seems AA have been doing some juggling with their CUN times. I am also on that flight at 1949 but coming in from LHR arriving around 1410 so will have 20 mins short of 6 hours at the airport.. I am One World Sapphire so will have use of the Admirals Clubs, can I also use the BA lounge for a bit ?
Any recomendations for some dinner at the airport or at a location close and accessable by public transport.. Having got caught in traffic on the beach flyer before dont quite think that is enough time to pootle down to the beach.

It is doable. I did INT-DOM with less than 2 hours scheduled connection and checked luggage. Make sure that you use the Visa Waiver kiosks instead of queuing for a booth. So long as there are no issues with bags -- if you have one/multiple -- you should be fine.

Different tickets and PRN. I understand AA doesn't allow single check-in and baggage check anymore. So I would need to check in again at MIA. Will probably have checked baggage.
Called AA and agent told me that should be fine for that time of the day. Sounds reasonable?

Unfortunately, that's the only direct non-stop flight to DEN before 7:50 PM.
Is there a staffed check-in/connecting flight area at the luggage re-check area in MIA outside of int'l arrivals? I can't remember. It's where they rebook people who miss connections usually, but they also can check you in just like regular agents. If there is you should be able to check-in there with an agent instead of going upstairs to the main check-in area. Obviously, please correct me if I'm wrong, but it works that way at DFW.
Is there a staffed check-in/connecting flight area at the luggage re-check area in MIA outside of int'l arrivals? I can't remember. It's where they rebook people who miss connections usually, but they also can check you in just like regular agents. Not sure how frequently this happens, but it does appear that the Pre-Check lane is opened from time to time when doing an international-domestic connection at MIA. This should reduce the need to go airside and then back through security. Alternatively, you get a card that means you can keep shoes and a light jacket on, but need to take out tablets/laptops.

Any advice on getting an Uber or Lyft pickup in MIA? Will be coming in from SFO next week. Last time I tried, I had difficulty sending my EXACT location to the driver, and we missed each other.
I know Lyft now allows you to call the driver and say something specific like "I'm in arrivals, just in front of the shuttlebus stand" but is it pretty easy? thanks!

International Connections in Miami
If one is flying from London to Jamaica with a connection in Miami, is it necessary to clear customs and immigration in Miami before boarding one's connecting flight? Thanks.

Now, MIA does offer ITI, so it is possible that when you check in at LHR, your bags might be tagged ITI, which means they are transferred for you without you needing to retrieve them at MIA. But you will still have to go through immigration and back through security at MIA.
