General Information
Despite it's size and five terminals, DFW is a fairly easy airport to navigate and connect though. If you have any difficulty, look around for kiosks / booths staffed by volunteer Ambassadors - they can usually be spotted wearing "ten gallon" cowboy hats. They offer maps and terminal guides (which include dining and shopping information).

There is no need to leave the secure area to move from one concourse to another. *Exceptions are arriving international flights. In such case one must normally clear immigration and customs, reclaim bags and proceed through security.

Terminal Link's blue and greens vans arrive every 10 minutes and will transfer you between all terminals once outside of security.

Walking between terminals
- Terminals A-C and B-D (international) are connected at the ends by departures level walkways; the people mover belts on these walkways have been out of service at least for years. Estimate at least a five to ten minute walk between A and C, B and D, more if gates are farther from the connector.
- Terminals A and B are connected by overhead walkways (escalator or lift / elevator). This walkway is serviced by working people mover belts, all of which are out of service as of 7/18/19. Courtesy carts use this route by using lifts.
- Terminals C and D (international) are connected by overhead walkways (escalator or lift / elevator). This walkway is serviced by working people mover belts.

Q. If I am making an international to international connection, what is the process?
There is no international transit process in most U.S.A. airports, but (DFW and MIA have a ITI baggage exception for international to international if arriving from some "approved" international origins). Arriving internationally, unless you have been pre-cleared or are excused by meeting ITI requirements as described here, you must proceed through U. S. immigration (there are kiosks and a fast channel for Global Entry approved passengers, and a "green line" for those with no checked bags), recover your baggage from the baggage carousel and proceed through U. S. Customs. There is a "green line" shortcut for passengers traveling only with carry-on baggage (no checked luggage) and there are Global Entry kiosks and a short cut to Global Entry queues.
Upon exiting Customs there is a bag drop facility; drop your checked connecting baggage, exit to the landside arrivals area.
NOTE: if your connection exceeds 11 hours or entails remaining overnight, you will normally be required to take your baggage with you and re-check it within ~four hours of departure.
NOTE: Any liquids in excess of security allowance will have to either be packed in checked baggage or, in the case of duty free purchases at your origin (or in air from other airlines), presented in STEB (Secure, Tamper Evident Bags) with receipts to TSA
Proceed to the kiosks to get boarding passes for your ongoing travel, or check in and re-check your baggage, then proceed through TSA security to airside (see the "DFW Security" section). Your international departure will be from Terminal D, also your international arrival terminal.

Arriving Passengers: After collecting your baggage, follow the Rental Car signs to the designated pick-up area on the lower level of the terminal. From there, board the Rental Car shuttle bus. Buses run 24 hours a day, depart (theoretically) every five minutes and reach the Rental Car Center in approximately 10 minutes.

Have a flight reservation on hold until midnight tonight. Still thinking about my options.
I only have two really. Do I fly ELP-DFW-LHR on the 77W, with a 3 hour layover in DFW. That is the safe bet, but not as glamorous as the next option.
Alternatively do I fly ELP-DFW-AUS-LHR on the BA 787? I have a 40 minute layover in DFW, and about a 2 hour layover in AUS.
40 minutes is awfully short. AA.com lists both ELP-DFW and DFW-AUS as S80 aircraft. Any way to know if it is the same plane doing both legs? Then the layover time isn't an issue.

With a three-hour layover in DFW, you might consider spending $50 on an Admirals Club daypass if you are not already an AC member.

Feels like a gamble just to experience the 787. I am going to try to see if I can get AA.com to give me an earlier ELP-DFW flight to give me a longer layover on my way to AUS. The multi city tool can be a pain fiddling with times and it still not giving me what I want.
I am definitely leaning on booking the 40 minute connection. It is the MCT for domestic to domestic in DFW. I won't be checking bags, and watch my flight like a hawk day of departure and if the ELP-DFW leg is delayed in the slightest I will ask to be switched to an earlier ELP-DFW flight, or be rebooked onto AA 50. Of course the risk I take is there could only be middle seats left, which wouldn't be much fun at all.

I went with the BA option through AUS, I will be flying in Economy/World traveler or whatever BA calls their economy. Last night I was actually going to just play it safe and fly AA 50 from DFW, but when I went to select that routing I got the dreaded message telling me that the fare is no longer available. So I said forget it and just purchased the reservation I had on hold, when I entered my credit card information I got an error message that the service is unavailable, but then right afterward it was put on request, and I see this morning my reservation has ticketed thankfully. 
hopefully no glitches come travel.
Even if it is on time, 40 minutes at DFW is too risky particularly when my final destination is international. So at checkin I am just going to go for a same day change to an earlier ELP-DFW flight to give me a longer layover in DFW, if that is not possible and I somehow miss my connection there are 3 nonstop DFW to LHR flights on AA, should make it to London the next morning barring a total irrops mess so I figure why not take the gamble to experience the 787?

When are you going? Everything I see from ELP-DFW is an A319 in the afternoon.
That being said with your 2 hours in AUS, I assume you are on the 3:15pm from DFW to AUS. There is also a 4:15 to AUS giving you 1 hour in AUS. If you misconnect you could still ask them to send you to AUS to catch the BA flight....

Immigration and Customs at DFW
Hello,
My apologies if this is in fact in the wrong thread.
I will be taking AA 138 HKG-DFW in F. I was curious about immigrations and customs at DFW. Do they have a fast track lane for F passengers ?
I recently arrived at JFK in LH F, and there was an agent waiting to escort me through and I cleared everything within 20 minutes. Will it be a similar experience at DFW or will I have to wait with the masses ?

Any fast tracking at DFW is not based on your airline status or class flown. If you're a US citizen, your options are:
Global Entry: a fast-track system that you need to apply for and pay for in advance
Going through a special line if you have no checked bags: I forget the term they use. That line can sometimes get quite long
Wait in line with everybody else

The entire customs hall was a disaster three weeks ago on HKG-DFW. Even with GE, I waited at least 30 minutes to exit.
Compare that to IAD, SFO, ORD, etc, where the wait has been under 5 mins to leave.

I just went through DFW and they were using alot of automated immigration kiosks, the process was quite fast... Took me less then 5min. They evidently also had kiosks at the non us citizen side so most can use those. Some are selected for further review...

This puts you into a separate line in immigration that is shorter.
If you travel alot, get Global Entry.

Traveling MEX -> LGA via DFW 3 weeks I ago I made a 25 minute connection, with GE and TSA Pre. Got off the plane in Terminal D at 3:55 , used the GE machines at the carry-on only lanes, turned right around to go back through security, Airtrain to Terminal A, boarded the 4:20/25pm flight. Traveling J/F so was able to deplane quickly, and handed the gate agent my boarding pass on the LGA flight and was switched right in, although in coach. I was ticketed on a flight leaving around 5:30pm.
I'm not that familiar with DFW but if you have GE and PRE you can make tight connections there.

HELP - Newbie question on how to avoid losing a connecting flight
Hi to all the Flyertalk community, been reading the forum quite a while but as all my working travelling is uneventful didn’t have a lot to comment until now, that’s why I’m seeking the collective knowledge.
I’m travelling with the family to CA on FEB I book with my miles through AA. So far so good until last week that I went through my reservation and find out that one of the connections is extremely difficult to reach.
The problem: I’m arriving to DFW from EZE at 6:58 in terminal D and my connection flight to SNA depart at terminal C at 8:55. I have about 60+ (?) min to go through immigration (We are non US citizens, collect the luggage, re-dispatch the luggage, move to terminal C, pass security and reach gate with wife and children’s.
If it were one of my working trip I wouldn’t worry too much about it but with wife and kids Im trying to avoid any suppressed.
Question:
1. It’s possible to make all that in 60+min?
2. I´ve called AA to change the connection time but they told me there is nothing available on my flight class. I was told that if I lose the connection I will be place on another flight regardless of the ticket class. Is this correct?
3. Any suggestions?
