NOTE: The last C45 777-223ER was retrofitted to C37 and Premium Economy at KPAE and returned to service 11 December 2018. Please see the new Which 777-200ER? thread here.
- Two J seats, two configurations as of 1/1/2019: Two, 37J Zodiac in 20 772 and Super Diamond in 27.
The final two Boeing 777-200 left to be retrofit (aircraft registrations N759AN and N795AN) entered the shop at the end of November. With these out of service, all 777-200s operating going forward will have the following configuration:
37 Business (1-2-1 arrangement)
24 Premium Economy (2-4-2)
66 Main Cabin Extra (3-4-3)
146 Economy (3-4-3)
link to American Airlines Retrofits Its 100th Widebody Aircraft With Premium Economy, TPG, 5 Dec 2018
- Premium Economy installation began June 2017, over December 2018 for the 45J - now converted to 37J.
- Route Deployment, "How can I tell?" and General Discussion
NOTE: On aa.com, seat charts make it difficult to identify which 777 has Zodiac or B/E Aerospace seats. See post #1 for the AA seat diagrams of the 777 Business cabins.
If the available (blue) seats have a notch in the front signifying aft (backward) facing seats, its a Zodiac Concept D Business Suite equipped aircraft.
If the available (blue) seats have NO notch in the front (are perfectly square), its a B/E Aerospace Super Diamond Solo equipped aircraft.

See HAECO interviews AA article here.
Longboater states the last 777 pre-CIP changes to CIP flight was 772 MIA-SCL July 5, 2017. The last old "NGBC" aircraft went to HAECO HKG 23 July 2017 for refitting.
The Points Guy (link) states AA will begin retrofitting 772s with three rows of 2-4-2 seating Premium Economy in June 2017 and finish in Q2 of 2018. AA will treat these as Main Cabin Extra for sales purposes until 15 Dec 2017.
There are 47 Boeing 777-223ER total in the AA fleet. They may be as follows:
13 refurbished 777-200ER (AA coded "772") with 45 Business seats with full flat solo suites with all aisle access, forward and aft facing, with the Zodiac Concept D Business Suite in Business, 55 Main Cabin Extra and 160 Economy seats. Link to SeatGuru "version 2" seat chart.
6 refurbished 777-200ER (AA coded "772") with with 37 Business seats with full flat solo suites with all aisle access, forward and aft facing, with the Zodiac Concept D Business Suite in Business, 58 Main Cabin Extra and 194 Economy seats. Link to SeatGuru "version 3" with 37 J seats.
The remainder of the 28 777-200ER fleet (currently AA coded as "772") is comprised of aircraft with 37 B/E Aerospace Super Diamond Solo all forward facing (at an angle to the fuselage center line) Business class, 58 MCE and 194 Economy seats. (No seat chart on SeatGuru yet, but the "Version 3" will probably suffice for MCE and Economy.)"
NOTE:,Premium Economy seating to be added (completion June 2018) resulting in loss of some Economy seats.

Zodiac Concept D Business Suite seat production problem slowed the CIP / refit to a crawl. (The Zodiac contract was terminated and a suit filed against Zodiac 24 Sep 2015.)
The airframes required infrastructure changes to support the new seats etc. and the reconfiguration was accomplished at the airframe's scheduled maintenance "C" check (performed by HAECO at HKG):
Widebody "C" Checks
Because of the complexity of widebody aircraft, all "C" checks are "Heavy C" checks. The complete airframe inspection and service is done every 24 - 30 months. It takes approximately 10,000 man-hours and from two to four weeks to accomplish a widebody "C" check.

ARCHIVE: Which 777-200ER / "772"? J, MCE, PEY, 45J to 37J
NOTE: Which Business seats a particular aircraft has is fairly opaque on aa.com’s seat charts.
If the available (blue) seats have a notch in the front signifying aft (backward) facing seats, it’s a Zodiac “Concept D” Business Suite equipped aircraft.
If the available (blue) seats have NO notch in the front on any seat (are perfectly square, as they all face forward at an angle), it’s a B/E Aerospace Super Diamond Solo equipped aircraft.
Sequentially below:
Zodiac 37 J aircraft cabin.
Zodiac 45 J Business cabin (truncated view; being refitted to 37 J)
Super Diamond 37 J Business cabin

Which 777-200ER / "772"? J, MCE refits done. PEY, 45J to 37J under way.
^ Thanks for the update!
Looks like my flight to EZE will be on an aircraft with the superdiamond.
I originally picked 1H and 1L assuming the Concept D seats, for the movement issues and the (limited) ability to face my husband versus a stranger.
Should we just move into row 2D/2H? Or go with 1L and 2L? Limited information on the superdiamond, but it seems it's difficult to talk to anyone directly? Even in Envoy (Cirrus) a window, and aisle seat could talk relatively OK.
Flight looks empty so perhaps it won't matter much anyways. Any help is appreciated.

And I would definitely move back from the galley into row 2/3.

I have a couple of questions about my upcoming flight, I am sure they are elementary to the experts on this thread so thanks in advance for the help.
I am on 281 on January 1 from DFW-ICN. It appears to be N753AN https://www.flightradar24.com/data/aircraft/n753an
1. According to the Wiki, it shows this as the super diamond seats and forward facing but the seat map shows a forward/rear facing config. Is that just a quirk in the seat maps or is is really forward/rear facing?
2. Anyone have experience with internet on the newly configured aircraft? Performance and cost info?
Thanks and appreciate all the good info in this thread, not sure how you guys keep up on all this stuff.

Having flown the Refurb&77W back to back... I actually liked the Refurb better. Call me crazy.
More privacy in the reverse. the only downside is that the screen is further away.

Yes, I am on the plane now and it is definitely forward facing even though it shows rear facing seats on the seat map. I like the setup with the exception of two things. First, the tray table even when pulled all the way forward is too high to work from comfortably. Second, it doesnt appear that you can move the seat forward independently without reclining the seat back or raising the leg rest. I like to sit mostly upright and use the stationary foot rest but cant find any way of getting it to that position. The seat is very comfortable from a cushion perspective though so when I get ready to take a nap I am sure it will be great. Internet is $19 by Panasonic and it kind of sucks, basic browsing only.

But then I had a few 77W flights this fall and changed my mind. 77W is my preferred.
I do like flying backwards, though. I seem to sleep better in the reverse seats, for some reason.

Were you in a center seat? Let us know what you thought about the privacy (or presumptive lack thereof) when you have a chance.

Also did find that it was hard to reach the footrest without reclining. There was no fwd/back adjustment like there is on the CX seat, for example. And because the screen is stationary and does't flip out like the CX version, it creates a fully enclosed cubby for your feet when in bed position.
Even though our flight came about because of a missed connection to JL11 the prior day, had a really good overall experience. Meals were decent, very good crew and a great hard product.

The seats are generally fine. However not being able to completely tuck away the table was bothersome.

Am on N765AN now and can sadly note that it is a Concept D 37J bird, not the BE seats... thankfully 7L is a great seat in either config but really missing the storage of the BE seats.

Flew this last week. It was private enough but strange they didn't put in a divider. My husband kept saying "no they wouldn't be that stupid" but relented they indeed were. He loved the seat, I thought it was nice. A little tight getting in/out but the TV and seat comfort were great. Also a great crew MIA-EZE.
